Bit the bullet today and order a replacement to a 2009 i7. Its lasted well, but starting to show signs of aging. Could probably get more out of it, but the lure of the hi res display is the clincher.

Probably overkill for my needs, but I am kind of a professional who uses it for work, although mostly web development, but do use a good bit of Adobe stuff if not much with video. Dreamweaver can be slow to open HTML files with other related files. Thinking that might be hard for the Fusion Drive to manage.

But it should last at least as long as this one, is tax deductible, and should hopefully get a few hundred for this one.

So gone all out for the i7, 1TB SSD and 395X, and will upgrade the RAM third party.

Delivery window is the 11-14th. Would be great if it came on Friday, but I think last time it came towards the end of the last day in the window. Kinda fun watching its progress around the world though!

6 or so years is a good time for an operational machine.

Received mine back in January ( same specs as yours bar 512 SSD) and am happy to report its a great all rounder.

The wife uses it during the day for work ( photography, in-design, emails etc)
I use it at night/weekends for personal projects ( after effects, premier, illustrator, bit of light C4D)

Hope it last us 6 or so years!

I think I'm going to pass on the new 9.7" iPad Pro. It's not enough of an upgrade over my Air 2 so it won't be beneficial to me. So I'm back to looking at the new iMac. Has there been any hint that Apple might upgrade this model this year? I'd hate to order one in the next month or two and then a new version comes out in September.
In the last few years the iMac has been updated in October. So it might be reasonable to assume that it will be around that time again.

Hey folks, I'm going to be in the market for a 27" 5k iMac. Does anyone know of have an idea if there will be a refresh soon? I'm always paranoid ever since I bought a beige G3 and then the blue & whites came out 2 weeks later :(

I'm going to need my new system kind of soon, I figured I could wait as long as june or july but if there might not be an update till late this year then I may as well just get it now.

The 27" iMac is currently the only one on the Skylake processors from Intel. It is the newest product in the portfolio right now. As I wrote earlier today in this thread, updates before October is not very likely. You can also look at the Buyers guide for the iMac on this website. It is usually a good indicator.

October. Either buy now or wait until fall. Summer is not a smart time to buy. Updates will probably not be huge, but you'll regret a purchase mid to late summer.

The most-likely update is going to be Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C.

We may see the new Kaby Lake CPUs from Intel, which will bring USB 3.1 and better integrated graphics (for the iMac 4K). We might also see the first generation of AMD's Polaris GPU in the 27", which looks to be a not-insignificant upgrade.

hmm.. thanks. I don't think I can wait till October, so I'll probably just go with what they have now. I'm going to be switching from a PC, I was going to invest in a 4K monitor, but then I need a new video card, and probably more ram and all.. it's probably better to just start new. I also have to get an expensive piece of 3D software where they make you pay for it again if you switch from mac to pc, so I'd rather get the mac now and start out with the right version on the right machine.

I've been using my 27" iMac Late 2015, Intel Core I5, 2TB Fusion Drive, 24 GB Ram for about two months now, best computer I've ever owned...

Went into Apple Store this morning and purchased 3.3GHz, 2TB, M395. I'll see how I get on with the 8GB Ram but if I want more which Ram should I go for? In the UK here if anyone has any recommendations.

Ordered Dec. 30. Expected arrival Jan. 5.

27" i7 16GB (2 x 8), 2TB Fusion, M395X

I've enjoyed this purchase since January. I also ordered a RAM kit with it, so it now has 24GB. It's nice that, as in previous iMacs, I didn't have to remove the factory RAM to add more, because it has extra slots. My biggest complaint is the lack of an audio-in port. I purchased an inexpensive USB audio adapter on Amazon (2 for $9.99 amzn.to/1M8eqtj) that does the job, but it's still a hassle, and it permanently takes up a USB port on my system.

The other good news is the performance. I was skeptical of the Fusion Drive, but it has proven thus far to be very fast and reliable, and shutdown problems surfacing after importing data from my previous iMac notwithstanding, boot times are very impressive — El Capitan actually boots as fast as Windows 10 now, which is not the case on my old 2012 iMac.

The video card (AMD Radeon R9 M395X 4096 MB) performance is very, very good; easily the best I have ever seen in ANY Mac. My biggest test for it so far has been "high" (default) settings in Dragon Age: Inquistion. At full resolution, 5120 x 2880, DA:I is playable, though sluggish, but looks phenomenal and it's remarkable that it can be played at all, frankly. At 4k performance is much better and that's what I've been using, again with the default ("high") video settings. Any lower setting just speeds it up even more, so performance can be really excellent. It's what I expected, and paid for.

If you had to choose the i7 or the upgraded video card, for everyday use, watching/streaming movies, gaming, which would you select? The upgraded video?

I'll be in the market over the coming months for a new machine. I have a i3 iMac 27in from 2010. It's served me well, no major issues but it's definitely slowing up. Or rather, latest web content, video demands etc have slowed it, it's just older technology at this stage.

I was looking at a MBP and then getting a separate monitor as I need to hook up my work windows laptop and infuriatingly, Apple stopped allowing the easy hook up with laptop to iMac to use the iMac's screen as an external monitor...But now, I think I can get by and just use MS Office on the Mac to create, amend documents and transfer them back to my work laptop when needed. So I think I'll be going iMac again.

The system will need to last 5 -6 years so this time I won't skimp. I may wait until the fall as I'm not in a mad rush to do it yet. I'll go full on with the RAM, SDD and graphics, so I can be sure it will last.

Good question. I've read many here saying go with the graphics card as the M395 is a big upgrade over the M390. I would imagine for media content/gaming, that bigger graphics card is more valuable.

Yes, it's very easy - and the only thing Apple allows you upgrade.

That's good, just checked a YouTube video, it's a breeze. Wonder how long that will last? The lyatest Mac Minis have the RAM soldered on I see as does the 21.5 iMacs. I hope they keep this option otherwise I'd rather buy before the next update.

Final question, no issue with adding different RAM size cards? The iMac with standard 8GB RAM has it in 2 X 4GB cards. Could you say add one 8GB card or does it have to be another 2 X 4GB?

You *probably* won't have any issues, but I wanted to be on the safe side and just installed 4 x 8GB from the same manufacturer.

My 2008 24" iMac just failed.

Here is my next one, arriving next week, I hope:

I've had my core i7 with 395X for a month now. Running Lightroom, Photoshop, and FCPX and it's been great.

I just wish we could update to the latest AMD drivers instead of having to wait for Apple to release an update. In Bootcamp under Windows 10, I'm getting display driver errors running some of my Steam games.

Went with the base model 3.2 i5, 2TB Fusion Drive, 380 graphics card. Education discount saved me $130 which I used to buy 16 GB of RAM from Crucial for a total of 24. Should be more than plenty as my mom only does a boat load of Chrome tabs(for no real reason), and Word and maybe iPhoto/iMovie on occasion but very light. My more limited usage will likely be the same. I do 4K video for Youtube every few weeks but really just to join a few videos together and add transitions and titles. Delivery tomorrow morning as well

Could have gotten a refurb 3.3 i5, 2TB Fusion and 395(2GB VRAM) graphics for $20 less but now that I'm thinking about it, it is likely overkill for what I will be using the machine for anyway. There is also the risk of there not being any stock once the refund hits my new Apple CC that I opened to do the 18 month financing.
