I ended up going this route as well. Gets here on tuesday.

Hope I'm not underwhelmed.

Hello everyone! My family and I are making the switch from MacBook Pros to a 27" iMac in the coming weeks. We want the best bang for our buck, but don't want to spend more than necessary. All these upgrades can be confusing to us. We would like a computer that fits out needs, and is also somewhat future proof.

We will be using the iMac for basic everyday family computing including PHOTO editing, iTunes, AppleTV streaming, Handbrake converting of movies, web browsing, you tubing, word processing, and school work. VERY VERY little video editing with iMovie (maybe 1 video a year for a work party or something).

What would your choice be to make us happy for years to come? We know for sure we will be going with the 2TB Fusion drive, and minimal RAM since we can upgrade that ourselves cheaper.

Thanks for any insight! Much appreciated!

The i7 will speed up all of your encoding with handbrake. By all accounts, the m390 is a solid graphics chip, but if the 395 is in your budget, get that. 2tb fusion is a good budget choice, especially for a family machine.

I'm new to video post. I looked up Handbrake and wondering what you use it for and when?

Bit the bullet today and order a replacement to a 2009 i7. Its lasted well, but starting to show signs of aging. Could probably get more out of it, but the lure of the hi res display is the clincher.

Probably overkill for my needs, but I am kind of a professional who uses it for work, although mostly web development, but do use a good bit of Adobe stuff if not much with video. Dreamweaver can be slow to open HTML files with other related files. Thinking that might be hard for the Fusion Drive to manage.

But it should last at least as long as this one, is tax deductible, and should hopefully get a few hundred for this one.

So gone all out for the i7, 1TB SSD and 395X, and will upgrade the RAM third party.

Delivery window is the 11-14th. Would be great if it came on Friday, but I think last time it came towards the end of the last day in the window. Kinda fun watching its progress around the world though!

I got that exact setup and also did the RAM upgrade from 8gb to 32gb myself. Also installed Windows 10 via Bootcamp for my gaming needs. A great system, but the AMD drivers need to be updated for some games like Far Cry Primal.

As much as I'd love to build a maxed out beast I just don't think we would ever push it to the limits.

No gaming, basic family computer, with emphasis on organizing and editing non professional photos, iTunes, web browsing, and storing our massive movie library.

Hoping the 3.3 i5 w/ 2gb fusion, m395, and 8gb ram will keep us happy for many years.

I just don't see us having any benefit from the i7, SSD, or advanced graphics card with our basic tinkering. We just want a efficient machine that will look amazing in our study and help organize or life's a little better than our 2009 MBP it's replacing.

That will be great. You can upgrade the RAM easily and inexpensively to 16GB when you get a chance and it will be a worthwhile upgrade.

Ordered yesterday, just changed to 'Preparing to Dispatch' - excited! :D

I guess it still might be a big ask to get from China to the UK by Friday though.

I've gone for the same and added an extra 16Gb of memory. I'm going to be doing my photo work on it and it will live in the playroom for the kids to use so its not going to be mega stressed.

I can live with a video render taking 4 seconds longer and the top graphics card seems to be a minor jump up and lets face it an iMac isn't a serious gaming machine.

Its been dispatched with an estimated delivery of Friday. Invoice has a Cork, Ireland address - not sure if that's admin, or if that's where its coming from.

Its arrived already - so ordered Monday, shipped from Ireland yesterday, delivered this morning via Dublin and Cologne. Not ad! I will mostly be transferring my information for the next few hours. Already seems lightning fast though, so very happy. If I can start opening HTML files in Dreamweaver without seeing the beachball that would be great. Its only a few seconds when I open / save these files, but when I'm doing it all day, it all adds up to a chunk of time over a week.

I think I'm going to pass on the new 9.7" iPad Pro. It's not enough of an upgrade over my Air 2 so it won't be beneficial to me. So I'm back to looking at the new iMac. Has there been any hint that Apple might upgrade this model this year? I'd hate to order one in the next month or two and then a new version comes out in September.

Um... There hasn't been any rumors of a upgrade. But it's too early to say.

If your really in the market.. Go ahead & buy one. I bought mine in January.
