Maybe I should have just posted this here to begin with. Need help.

I use Photoshop CC, Lightroom, Final Cut Pro X, and sometimes iMovie.

Pricing is similar so would I be better served with
4.0 Core i7 and AMD R9 M390
or
3.3 Core i5 and AMD R9 M395

Will install and SSD and upgrade ram so considering those items to be equal in both machines what is my best bet or will I even notice a difference? I my time is split 50/50 between stills and video.

thanks in advance.
although i answered this in another thread, i will do so again here. for the work you want to do you really want both the i7 and 395. get the 2tb fusion and hold off on the ram upgrade. that should give you enough budget to get what you really need.

Oooh...I can't imagine how much that cost down there with the "Australia Tax"

It cost a lot and I was sooooo looking forward to setting it up after work and I was faced with this, a line of dead pixels or something from the top of the screen to the bottom on the left hand side :(:mad::mad::mad:

I'm hoping to order one next week to replace my late 09 iMac.

Use it mostly for web development - so no video editing, but quite a bit of things like Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign, and is in use pretty much full time for work.

Was planning on going for the i7, and upgrade the RAM myself.

Only question is how worth it it would be to upgrade to the 395X - I'm guessing probably not as I don't do any video editing (or gaming), but wondered if it might have some benefit anyway just to drive the 5K display?

According to one site, if you plan on driving a second high res monitor, go for the 4GB VRAM, otherwise the 2GB will be fine if you're not doing video or games. Make sure you get a 2TB fusion or 512NVRAM drive minimum. Though I encourage people on a budget to hold off on the RAM upgrade and put money towards things you can't upgrade later (like the higher end video card).

Going to pull the trigger and I'm here pulling my hair out between
i5 with the m395 and the i7 with the m395X

I use Photoshop, Lightroom, Final Cut, and iMovie apps the most.

I've read thread after thread and watched a ton of videos. Still can't decide. $400 difference.

Guess I should shut up and just get the i7...

SPEND THE MONEYYYYYYYYY - More power sitting around is cooler than having less power fully utilized.

If you can afford the $400 (i.e. not go into debt for it, like carrying credit card debt) then you will be better off. Over the life of the computer, you'll kick yourself for not spending the extra $100 a year or so. However, if it creates a debt load, then go for the less expensive machine.

More power might be cool, on the other hand the i7/M395X combination seems to run fairly hot. I therefore bought the cold and quick (enough) i5/395/SSD. No noisy fans blowing here :)

The Fix: Noise Canceling Head Phones. BTW doesn't apple install noise flat fans that produce less noise. Dunno. I5/395/SSD sounds good too - I am just to geeky and can afford it.
Just Like Andylaiphoto did, I also read numerous iMac threads, tests and reviews. Googled for CPU/GPU TDP's, benchmarks etc. It's all about determing what you want/expect the machine to do for you. High performance = i7/M395X.

Yeah, I have another one on the way. Should be here Monday. Hope it will be ok.

Having that very combination, running premiere pro intensively, I can tell you THAT IS NOT TRUE. The i7 395X combo is cool and only gets warm/noisy when encoding video. And the exact same thing will happen with an i5 -- just for a longer period of time because it's a slower chip without 8 virtual cores..

Just put in my order for a 27in 5k with the i7/m395x combo and 512 SSD. I'll upgrade the RAM later if needed, I'm upgrading from a mid-2010 27in iMac, delivery window starts Fri, can't wait!

From a 2010-era, it'll feel like you basically got introduced to a whole new level of computing. Hope you get it Friday :)

How big are your photo files and by your thumbs up I'm guessing you haven't noticed any slow down or issues?

I export 500raw images from a Canon 5D MkII to jpeg yesterday and it took my '10 MBP freaking 2.5hrs.
