My Dad used to work at a reseller for IBM way back in the day. He brought us home a IBM PC that looked something like this.

I was in the single digits of grade school using Lotus 1-2-3 to type up my spelling words over and over. It was to teach me to type and to have me work on my spelling. This was way back before the days of spell check.

Then around the time of Windows 3.1 my Dad bought a gateway 2000 machine. I don't remember all of the specs on it but I am fairly sure it was a 486 with a double speed CD ROM and a sound card. I played Sim City 2000, Star Wars Rebel Assault, Comanche Maximum Overkill and AEGIS: Guardian of the Fleet. This is around the time I was exposed to the command prompt and the underlying commands.

It looked like this.

Those are the same specs I have on my iMac. I went with the trackpad because I already had a brand new first generation Magic Mouse. I didn't want to have to not be able to use the mouse while it is charging. I'm very happy with the track pad and barely use the mouse at all.

You are so right the SSD on this machine flies.

Cool! In many ways, that was the beginning of it all :) I remember those Gateways well. We are speaking of roughly the same time frame. Lotus 123 and WordPerfect were king when I started :)

I have the iMac with 1TB Fusion drive for one week and I like it. It is even fast in booting and internet/mail etc. The build-in apps are starting very fast. And the screen is.. AWESOME :D.

As I'm not a heavy user I don't lack speed, i like it so much that I already sold my windows laptop.
My plans to use a TB SSD is put on hold, I upgraded the ram to kingston Hyperx 16GB and removed the standard 8GB.

Your planning on opening up to install that SSD?

I upgraded to the 256SSD storage... I had thoughts of using the other storage location to add a TB HD. But just don't want to go thru the hassle of opening it up & installing it.

Got my new machine. All setup all software now running fine.

All I can say is WOW.

I am very pleased!

No, I'm not planning to open the iMac.

I've bought the iMac via a lease construction with my employer and that way I payed roughly half of the price (and the employer the other half). The disadvantage is that the configuration was fixed (all 2300 employees where able to buy an imac, macbook,... in fixed configs) and that's why I'm stuck with the 1TB Fusion drive.

But at this stage I don't have the feelig the iMac is slow (as I'm a light user) and there is no need for the SSD at this stage. If I buy an SSD it will be external with Thunderbolt and not internal.

Why did you remove the 8GB in there? To sell? It never hurts to have a little headroom for the RAM....

Because I believe Apple's advise is to have max 16GB of ram with the 1TB Fusion because the SSD is to small to put everything on the SSD in hibernate. That would take to much time.
And the speed is dropping to 1600MHz in stead of 1866MHz, although I know I won't feel the difference :).

Is your display 4 or 5K? That makes a huge difference. Are you surfing the web and doing word processing, then not a huge difference in terms of performance, but noticeable. Anything more demanding, certainly a great improvement depending on the specs of the machine you purchase..

Yup, web surfing, email and a little word processing. Nothing intense. I like my computers to be fast and the monitor to have an amazing picture. But there comes a point when it's not being used to its full potential so it doesn't matter. Like having a flashy high horsepower car that you slowly take up to 60 MPH.

Ordered this today!

8GB 1867MHz DDR3L (2x4GB)

27" iMac, 4.0GHz, 8GB RAM, 1TB SSD, M395X. Delivers Oct 17 - Oct 21.
Ordered the exact same setup with Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad. Received the system 3 days ago. Have since installed 32gb RAM, and ordered a 8tb RAID external drive and a Pioneer Blu-ray writer. Already installed Windows 10 via Bootcamp, and wondering if I should get Parallels as well.

Reveived and installed my new 27" iMac 5K, 3.3GHz, 24GB RAM, 512 SSD, M395 yesterday. What a machine! quick, silent, powerful sound/base (amplifier must be ok, headphones sound great on this iMac, better than on my late 2013 iMac). The screen quality is magnificent.

As OS Yosemite works very well om my other iMac, I wasn't keen on switching to OS El Capitan, but till now Al Capitan works fine/flawless.

The Magic Trackpad can't be used for dragging items from the far left to the far right of the screen or vice versa, the trackpad is just to small, or the screen is to big. Halfway dragging, your finger will reach the outline of the trackpad. Therefore I am using both the trackpad and the mouse.

Anyways, the iMac exceeded my expectations.

Well I've had buy new iMac for a few weeks now and yes, it's running great. Absolutely thrilled with it.

Nows a new problem though... My 2011 MacBook pro looks like a POS. Likely gonna have to upgrade that too to a rMBP. Ugh. Apple, please just sign into my bank account and take what you need.

Better Apple take your money. Too late for me, I have already given my dentist carte blanche access to my account :)

But I know what you mean for sure. I have to leave the room when I see the screens some folks are working on.

Retina forever.

When I was first looking at the 5k iMacs at the Apple store, of course they looked amazing. But it wasn't until I was transferring my data and I had them side by side did i realize how truly impressive the new 5k iMac was. Hit me like a ton of bricks. Comparing side by side with my old 2009 24" iMac I thought "how could you have been using this thing for all these years? All yellow and fuzzy and stuff. Ha.

FCPX loves me now!

I got from best buy the 3.2Ghz quad core i5 with the 1tb fusion and the radeon m390 2gb vid ram and ive had it for about a month and abosulty thrilled with the machine

Maybe I should have just posted this here to begin with. Need help.

I use Photoshop CC, Lightroom, Final Cut Pro X, and sometimes iMovie.

Pricing is similar so would I be better served with
4.0 Core i7 and AMD R9 M390
or
3.3 Core i5 and AMD R9 M395

Will install and SSD and upgrade ram so considering those items to be equal in both machines what is my best bet or will I even notice a difference? I my time is split 50/50 between stills and video.

thanks in advance.
