I got Mountain Lion 10.8.4 going on my late 2006 iMac finally with Macpostfactor. However, when I try to update to 10.8.5 my system crashes after the reboot after the update when I try to turn it on and only shows a circle with a horizontal line through it. It's frustrating because some apps will only work if I have 10.8.5. Any work arounds for this?
try reinstalling MCPF patches on the recovery HD.

Right on. Dude you rock. It took the software update that time. Got this computer how I want it so no more tinkering with it for me. It will overall be worth the $40 I paid for it at least.

Hi, friends, one question:

A few weeks ago I did a Carbon Copy Cloner of my SSD of my Macbook 2,1, with Yosemite thanks to OS X Hackers, and cloned it to an old laptop, an acer 5315, that has a similar config to Macbook 4,1, that is, GMA X3100 and C2D. After that, and from my Mac I installed a Hackintosh bootloader, Chimera 4.0.1, to the acer SSD, using a tool called Unibeast. I only needed to add a boot flag (IGPEnabler=No) and after installing the GMA X3100 kext, the acer computer booted up with a nice screen resolution, 1280x800, as it was a Macbook 4,1. I have to admit it works better than my real Macbook 2,1.

I wonder: if I have a Macbook Pro 3,1, supported by El Capitan, can I clone the SSD to my Macbook 2,1, and, after that, can I install some type of bootloader, as I did with my Hackintosh, to get it working? Is it possible to install directly the OS X patches (efi.boot and whatever needed) to get the Macbook 2,1 booting up el Capitan? How can this be done?

What do you all know about this??

Thank you very much,

PS1 And what about the Acer 5315? Yesterday I installed El Capitan on it, using a bootloader called Clover. You can see the results:

PS2 An what about my Macbook 2,1? It's still waiting for being updated to El Capitan. I cannot believe it cannot be done, as stated in the post #1 of this thread!

Technically it's possible -- clone the OSX 10.11 Partition with CCC from the MBP3,1 to the MB2,1. Enable the Remote Desktop before since USB isn't working on the MB2,1 under OSX 10.11 and therefore no Input Devices are available. Replace the Boot.efi in /System/Library/CoreServices and /usr/standalone/i386 with the SIP-off version from Post #351 (Build 2). Reboot the MB2,1 and look if OSX 10.11 works or not. To get USB working, copy the Beta-USB-Kexts (provided by TMRJIJ - OS X Hackers) into /System/Library/Extensions/ , replace the current Kexts.

You said the X3100 has a nice flow to it. By chance, do you have QE/CI?

Guys, sorry if this question has been asked already but can I get El Capitan on an iMac 6,1? Seems like no one mentions the 6,1 but only the 4,1 and 5,1.

Got one given to me today with a wiped drive. Can't even boot it.

I have a current MBP where I would prepare a bootable USB stick, which I would then use to boot and install the iMac 6,1.

Possible? (can't even check if it comes with 1GB of RAM or more since I do not have such a small screw drive).

If too much of an hassle, what would be the latest OS X I could install on it via a bootable USB stick?

Thank you very much!

Seems like the HDD on the iMac I got is fried and from the Youtube videos I saw, it is a PITA to replace...

Got to know that this iMac 6,1 has a C2D 2.16GHz, 3GB of RAM and the nVidia 7600GT on it though. So might be worth going through the pain of replacing the HDD and maybe even getting a 2GB RAM to get it up to 4GB.

What do you think?

And getting El Capitan to run on it is now more feasible?
Boot ROM Version: IM61.0093.B07
SMC Version (system): 1.10f3

Thanks!

No - maybe it's better to install OSX 10.10 Yosemite:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/os-x-yosemite-on-unsupported-macs-guide.1761432/

OSX 10.11 El Capitan is due to the System Integrity Protection and the USB-issue quite complicated.

And without the appropriate Kexts for the nVidia 7600GT it's useless to work with - not even considered the QuartzExtreme/CoreImage graphics acceleration as well as OpenGL/OpenCL.

If you have a supported Mac you could try it nevertheless - see the Post #482 above. Try it with a external FireWire Harddisk.

Thank you very much for your answer, I'll check how remote desktop works because I've never used that (I've used Teamviewer and VNC Clients, but not this, which I supposed is the OS X native one). Although I have to say that comparing to the Clover Hackintosh El Capitan installation method the method you are explaining seems like climbing the Everest!

Thanks!!

You said the X3100 has a nice flow to it. By chance, do you have QE/CI?

No, there's no QECI, but I cannot understand some things... Hackintosh seems to be better than a real Macbook Pro.

For example, my MBP 3,1 (4 GB RAM) El Capitan supported (and supposedly better than an Acer with a X3100) with a 240 GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD and with trim enabled gives a read speed of about 130 Mb/s. Into the Hackintosh (3 GB RAM) a not so good SSD (HyperX Fury 120 GB) with trim enabled gives a read speed of about 240 Mb/s, benchmarks by blackmagic disk test speed. The two machines are supposed to be SATA I, and it's supposed a MBP that costed 2000 $ in 2007 should be better than a 400 $ cheap laptop. The same Samsung 850 EVO SSD on a Macbook 2,1 gives a read speed of only about 120 MB/s.

So, my sensation is that, although you don't have QE/CI, on my Hackintosh (3 GB RAM) you have El Capitan easily, powerfully, and better than with a Macbook 2,1... I suppose MB 4,1 will not be much better than MB 2,1...

Or it is simplier: A 45$ Fury is better than the most acclaimed 850 EVO?

Note: I suppose this simple read speed difference can be what explains that Hackintosh seems faster and better than the MBs.

Yosemite would be great already! Do you think that one will work fine or I will still run into problems?

Just did a bootable USB with Yosemite.app using the Terminal and the iMac is not booting from it (pressing C when booting).

It booted from the USB yesterday when it had Snow Leopard (dmg that I loaded with Disk Utility on the USB stick) on it.

Any thoughts?

The best way in my opinion to install Yosemite is to go through SFOTT automated script here

For OSX 10.11 El Capitan at the moment only as described in Post #1, Post #418 or Post #482.
That's all, unfortunately.

I do not mean install El Capitan on my unsupported Mac but yes make a USB Stick installation of Yosemite from my MBP running El Capitan. SFOTT does not run on El Capitan.

I've changed boot.efi as you explain , and my MB2,1 boots but gets stuck with that symbol you see when your machine is not supported by the OS.

I've modified /System/Library/CoreServices/PlatformSupport.plist, but it's as I did nothing, the same forbidden symbol.

Do you know where/how can I say to El Capitan my MB 2,1 is supported?
IMG_20160705_083255.jpg

Maybe do I need to do step 16 of post #1, too?
16. Copy the folder named "Kernels" from '/Applications/OS X Hackers Patch Files/' to the '/System/Library/Kernels/' folder on the installer thumb drive. -->> DONE. NO RESULTS: I get the same screen/forbidden symbol.

Since I don't have a MB2,1 I can unfortunately not reconstruct the issues in detail.

Because USB doesn't work without a Patch (Beta-USB-Kexts , provided by TMRJIJ - OS X Hackers) , use a FireWire-HDD or a replaced internal HDD with the transferred OSX 10.11.

Pike R. Alpha had the Board-IDs of the Mac models hard-encoded in his Boot.efi so that there's no need to modify the PlatformSupport.plist anymore, but I'm not sure if he had added all EFI32 Mac models. Have a look into the Boot.efi Developer Thread. Maybe it helps simply to delete the PlatformSupport.plist instead of modifying it.

Maybe do I need to do step 16 of post #1, too?

No, if you use a transferred OSX 10.11 because the Kernel is already at its place.

Hi, atvusr.
Thank you for your advices. I wonder if you can and would like to help me a little bit more.
I cloned the El Capitan SSD from MacbookPro 3,1 and changed the boot.efi with no results.
But I tried to do the same from the SSD of my Capitan Hackintosh.
After that, as you suggested, I put the cloned HDD as main HDD to the Macbook 2,1. It reboots because it panics but if I press Mayus when booting, aka Capitan safe mode, I see this:
IMG_20160706_170345.jpg
But keyboard not working, trackpad neither. USB neither.
I've installed some kexts in a rude way (USBInjectAll.kext and GMA950****.kext and bundles). The rude way: connecting the HDD as external to my MBP and deleting S/L/Caches -- kext file
and copying directly kexts to S/L/E --> so, the next time El Capitan boots reconstructs the kext cache.

Can I do something to get better results, like keyboard or USBs working? Do you have any ideas?

Thank you!!
PS I imagined USBs not working but I didn't imagine keyboard and trackpad would have the same luck.

The best is to start all over again to avoid any side effects -- clone the working OSX 10.11 and replace the Boot.efi (from Post #351 , Build 2) again.

Then copy the Beta-USB-Kexts (provided by TMRJIJ - OS X Hackers) into /System/Library/Extensions/ , replace the current Kexts.

After a reboot the Input Devices should now work. They are internally connected via USB -- if USB doesn't work, the Input Devices don't work too.

If OSX 10.11 works you could try then to add the Graphics Kexts with a Kext-Installer-App (e.g. EasyKext Utility).

I've done *exactly* what you said. It boots with safe mode, but if I try to boot "normal" it reboots again and again (the same I had yesterday).

What's better: Touchpad works. Keyboard bloq mayus - bloq num responds. If I connect an USB optical mouse, lights switch on. The trouble is that I have the big button of the trackpad broken, and I cannot go into the session because I cannot click with the touchpad, but I need to do with the big button. USB mouse gets power but doesn't function. It's strange, because I have configured my MBP just to click touching the pad, but maybe this setting is not loaded into safe mode.

EDIT-UPDATE 1: After a verbose boot, I realise usb kexts are not loading. I've repaired kext caches and now they are being loaded. USB mouse works as expected. When I write the password and hit return, the system reboots. Kernel pacnic. When I boot again in verbose mode, it says shutdown cause is 3.

Question: Maybe copying the GMA950 yosemite kexts (provided by OS X Hackers) directly to S/L/E will improve the normal booting?

EDIT-UPDATE 2: I've installed GMA950 kexts, from OS X HACKERS: http://dl.osxhackers.net/Kexts/GMA 950 Kext Installer.pkg cleaned and rebuilt kext cache...

I've had other panics:
1) panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff801b9ce5fa): Kernel trap at 0xffffff801b9b5b51, type 14=page fault,
2) panic(cpu 1 caller 0xffffff801e9ce5fa): Kernel trap at 0xffffff801eae6ac4, type 13=general protection,
3) panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff801f5ce5fa): Kernel trap at 0xffffff801f552f18, type 13=general protection
4)
*** Panic Report ***
panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff80003ce5fa): Kernel trap at 0xffffff7f80ec498a, type 14=page fault,

EDIT 3: I've realised all the logs finishes with the com.apple.kec.corecrypto. I've found a post where some people seems to be complaining from these issues.
Type 14: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7256129?tstart=0
And another similar thread about type 13: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5698109?tstart=0

EDIT 4: Last loaded kext are always com.apple.filesystems.autofs 3.0 or com.apple.driver.pmtelemetry 1

EDIT 5: I don't know what to do next. Maybe Pike's boot.efi is only for MBP and Mac Pros and is not intended for MacBooks?

Any ideas? Thank you again!

Yep -- it's not easy to get OSX 10.11 working stable on older unsupported Macs, except the Mac Pro 1,1/2,1.

The Kernel Panics or sudden restarts after a few minutes occur also on the Mac mini 2,1 (Post #349) as well as on the MacBook Pro 2,2 (Post #358). I had the same experiences: the KPs display different causes and there's no pattern, but it seems indeed to come from Pike's Boot.efi for OSX 10.11 El Capitan. Maybe Pike R. Alpha can solve this issue while working on the Boot.efi for macOS Sierra 10.12.

The USB-Kexts are still in Beta status and they don't work perfectly yet -- only TMRJIJ / OS X Hackers can help with it.

The Graphics Kexts could be the next issue -- while it was quite easy to get the ATI X1600 Graphics Kexts from OSX 10.7 Lion running under OSX 10.10 Yosemite, I got these not running with OSX 10.11 El Capitan.

The only way to get OSX 10.11 working stable on older unsupported Mac seems to be a step-by-step solution: first a stable Boot.efi, then stable USB-Kexts, after that working Graphics Kexts, later on the solving of the remaining issues.

A lot of work -- maybe it's easier to stick with OSX 10.10 Yosemite.

While it's already pretty hard to get OSX 10.11 El Capitan running on older unsupported Macs, it's even harder to get macOS 10.12 Sierra running on these machines due to the required SSE4.1 CPU instruction set which is only supported by the 2008 'Penryn' CPU models or newer.
