Has the symptom consistently not recurred on that MacBook Pro?

Has the symptom recurred on the other MacBook Pro?

No appended numbers, nor wake from sleep issues yet.

It should be noted that I updated the firmware on the Apple TV on the one MBP that had the wake from sleep issues.

Its very inconsistent, for me if I turn off "Wake for network access", run for while, then turn it back on, all is well. I think it's provoked by changing networks, possibly using different network GHz.

Problem solved! I turned on "Back to my Mac" in System Preferences/iCloud and did the same for all of my 4 AirPort Extremes, updated them and the "ghosts" are gone...:)

thanks, this temporary workaround worked for me.

look forward to apple fixing the issue so that i turn off back to my mac... i dont like having this open

FYI - removed 2 in sharing, has not come back in 48 hours

I remove the (2) from Sharing and it'll sometimes last weeks. Doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to this bug. In my case the DHCP address and name remain the same, just the Sharing name gets changed.

Well after installing 10.10.3 I was quite pleased with Yosemite untill after 2 days the big (2) appeared again, I can't believe that Apple cannot address this problem and get it fixed. Thank God for Mavericks!!! Also cannot believe that they would disable iPhoto but leave it in the Applications folder with the big old disabled stamp all over it.

Ditto on the hostname (2) problem, was OK for a few days, then.

Turning off Wake for Network Access in power settings is definitely the cure. Just turn it off prior to renaming the machine back.

This is interesting... It happens to my 10.8.5 main boot drive and my new iPhone as well.... I thought I was the only person having this issue. It started happening to me after security update 2015 003

Hi,

I had massive problems with this renumbering and was not able to remove it. I finally fixed it. I was running Avahi and replaced it with mdns-response, now all problems are gone.

Background:

I have two networks:

LAN: Contains Access Points, Apple TV, Macs, iPhones, iPads
DMZ: Contains NAS, NetStream and other Devices

Normally the clients in the LAN would not be able to find the Bonjour services in the DMZ, so I was running Avahi on the Firewall, that routes between those networks. When turning off Avahi, the problem disappeared, but I needed it. I found the software mdns-resolver (or was it responser). And now all clients can find all services, but I don't have renaming.

I have no clue, what the EXACT reason was, but I detected a small difference. With Avahi, for example, all AirPlay speakers instantly appear, with mens-respoder it lasts 2 or 3 seconds. But I can live with it happily.

Hope this helps.

Well it's still not fixed. I even installed a new drive and did a clean install. No network sharing, screen sharing etc...

After a clean install, it's not at Mac Pro (5). I can delete it and keep the window open, and about 30 seconds later it will append (5) to the name.

I've just changed the name to Mac Problem and so far it's holding.

Which one?

Unfortunately, I can't say. I participate in the AppleSeed program, and have been running the beta/AppleSeed versions of OS X since prior to Mavericks.

I had the problem ongoing and it was causing grief with everything from network shares to TimeMachine backups. One of the beta releases of Yosemite 10.10.2 (I think) fixed the issue for me. I once I saw that on my testing MBA, I installed the beta on my rMBP and have not had the issue since.

Sorry that I cannot recall which update it was, but I am currently running the production release of 10.10.3 on my rMBP (and other Macs in the house) and don't have the issue any more.

This problem was resolved for me some time ago after rebooting my airports and updating Yosemite. (I too participate in the beta program)

It's been suggested that the following resolves the issue for many:
1. power off all Apple TVs
2. power off all Macs
3. reboot Airport/router
4. restart everything.

Yeah, I've done all this and much more. Now I just ignore it as it's something that Apple has no intention of ever fixing as far as I can tell.

As already mentioned above, there is a way if you don't mind taking a couple of steps backwards.

I can tell you whats wrong

I've been on the phone with apple for about the past 2 months. 27 calls to be exact. If you could take a look at a couple things for me on your mac book I can tell you if you are having the same issue that everyone will eventually have.

Shutdown and boot into Recovery Mode (Cmnd+R prior to chime, hold down until you see loading bar) Go to Dick Utility then go to File//Open Disk Image. Once your there make sure you are searching through your computer by selecting the drop down menu in the middle to select your MacBookPro. The culprit could be your 'Mac OS X Base System'. Orange disk image for icon most of the time....click once......hit command+shift + > this will bring up any hidden files or virtual disk images. If you get nothing. Click on your macbook and repeat keystroke. When I would do it I would get anywhere from 2-17 virtual disks labeled as "Untitled". If this is your finding then please message me through this MacRumors Site. I am open to recieve mesages

Open Terminal while your on you home wifi access point
type --> netstat -a OR just netstat
Please inform me of how many active connections you have there in the first list of output 'Active Internet Connections'.

Then if you could give it the'ol
type --> ifconfig
and then tell me what you see there I can begin to trouble shoot this problem for you. Apple told me they couldn't help me and that I should call the Cyber Division in my city and/or the FBI. The problem and problems i've read in this thread are similar.

Do you have any issue using your sudo command?

If anyone does this 3 step check and comes up with anything strange feel free to message me.
