I don't ... and I'm not saying that I don't believe you.
It at least solved my problem.

Do you have an Airport Basestation or Apple TV that will act as a sleep proxy?
Do you share iTunes Libraries over WiFi?

I have an APE, but DHCP is turned off. DHCP is served by my Virgin Media hub.

I guess this is another one of those things that Apple need to fix.

In post #237, medgirl2001 links to a solution that worked for me - 2 weeks now. Followed the guide to the letter, nothing else has been changed.

This is a problem that the 10.10.1 update fixes, right?

It's never happened to me before Yosemite.

Since 10.10.1 it hasn't seem to appear again, for me.

10.10.1 does not fix it.

Did for me. Not sure what happened but no more numbers being appended to computer name.

I wonder for those who the fix didn't work, did everyone renew the DHCP? I restarted the Airport Extreme just to be sure after applying the fix and I've been stable for days, all machines, though multiple sleep, reboots, etc. Note, I had the symptom on all my machines before.

Computer name keeps changing

Since installing Yosemite, my mac name keeps changing with an appended number in brackets. It is happening to both macs on my network, a mac mini and an rMBP.

I have tried to change the name permanently using the sudo hostname -s command in terminal but it doesn't change.

I also tried the sudo scutil –-set HostName command which also didn't work.

I'm not sure why this appended number thing keeps happening but I think it's affecting my ability to sync over wifi

any enlightenment on this issue is appreciated.

EDIT: oh, I see there was already a thread and I've been merged into it. I got up to (30) if there are any prizes.

Anyone ever tried deleting:

com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
NetworkInterfaces.plist
preferences.plist

From /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration ?

I just did, computer name was reset to default after reboot which i then changed back to my previous name. Can't say how long it will last. And i hope this won't mess up my Time Machine backups :D

I did. I got that "fix" from an Apple senior advisor. It held for about 8 days before reverting to the (x).

Does anyone know how to fix this? A while back OS X started adding a "(2)" to my computer name. (See below.) I've tried deleting the "(2)", I've tried changing the computer's name various times, but the "(2)" always comes back.

Since this computer is the only with this name on my network, I don't understand why it insists on adding a "2".

Does anyone know why it's doing this and how to get rid of it for good?

.

The name "MacBook" is fairly generic. The default name is something like "Personal Name MacBook"... so it seems as though you've manually reduced that to just "MacBook"? Would there happen to be other MacBooks on the same network that have the same name? Surely multiple machines can't have the same hostname on the same network, so it's appending (2), etc in order to make them unique.

I see that disabling the Energy Savings setting fixes this problem, but I'm still curious what happens if there are indeed multiple machines sharing the same hostname.

That's what's supposed to happen if there are multiple computers with the same name on the network, but in this case, the (2) is appended to computers which have unique names on the network. It's a problem in the OS, not an issue about actual computer names.

What has worked for me, is to go back to my older router... And to not use the TC/AE as my internet portal... It is still running for TM though. And working fine.

What I have also noticed is that Airport Utility kept forgetting or losing contact with the TC/AE. Requiring me to turn off wifi and then turn it back on. This happened nearly all the time.

However, since circumventing the TC/AE the problem is solved. This appears to be related with Airport Utility and Apple's TC/AE.

Yet another bug amongst the many that is OS X Yosemite.

All I have to do is this;

Rename the computer in the Sharing applet.
Shut the computer down.
Power off the router.

Power on the router.
Boot the computer.

{sarcasm}
I do this about 3 times a day and it's all cleared out.

Alternately, I also leave it powered off and use a different system. It seems to be fine as long as you don't use your computer.
{/sarcasm}

Seriously, I still have this problem, and for me, none of the solutions offered in this thread are working. When I feel motivated, I'm going to do a clean install on a bare drive and see if that will help. I just don't feel like putting all my apps. and updates back on. It's a PITA and something I've never had to do before where OS X is concerned.

Save yourself the time, a clean install does not resolve it. Mine is a clean install of Yosemite and as above the only thing that has worked has been not to use Airport Utility, with a TC/AE. But to use a third party router...

Okay, thanks. I'm not surprised. I really didn't want to start from scratch again just for this issue. Now I know.

This was fixed for me on 10.10.2

Well, since that hasn't been release yet, I can't test that. Not putting anymore beta software on here.

Hi,

I have 10.10.2 public beta and I still have the problem. It looks like it might have to do with IPv6 on my LAN. I disabled the Router Advertisement and renamed all computer back and will continue watching.

Can anybody confirm, that this also happens without IPv6?

Regards,

DK

.

I, too, began receiving the dialogue box notifications that my computer had been renamed to "2". I was worried that we were possibly being hacked. This had happened several times at our old house, before we moved to a new home... and changed to a new ISP (sounds like Con-cast). I had previously used Ethernet most of the time, and my wife used our router's WiFi. Didn't quite put 2+2 together.

In our new home, we used WiFi-only for the first two months -- until recently, when I switched back to an Ethernet connection. With both my wife and I using WiFi, there was never an issue.

However, as soon as I switched back to Ethenet, I started getting the dialogue boxes, again... because my wife still uses WiFi, anywhere she's comfortable. Still didn't put 2+2 together until I began looking through several Mac/Apple-related forums.

Went to CNET at this link:
http://www.cnet.com/news/tackle-a-macs-name-changing-with-sequential-numbers/

--and received their reassuring message.... The dialogue pop-ups are arriving, again, because we are using 2 forms of access -- and the computer is adjusting to allow for it.

So, I'm more relaxed about it now, though we are still going to test it out to see (under both set-ups -- WiFi only vs. Ethernet and "Wife"), if the messages return (and the renaming happens again) under WiFi only. Now that I've reset the local host name, I won't worry about it. However, if the computer renames to "3" I'll be concerned.

Hope this helps (and makes sense).

I changed no PList files, did not do a reinstall, did not restart any of my network gear (that I recall), mine has been solid since before Thanksgiving. The only thing I did was shut it down to go to my brother's for that holiday, used it there, then brought it home again. I don't recall how long it was before the holiday that I fixed the name but mine has been perfect since.

For whatever reason this keeps happening on my mom's eMac running Mac OS X Leopard v10.5.8. It's the only Mac on the network and thus the only Mac with that name. No idea why.

Phew, problem now seems to be gone on my iMac. Even the ghosts in the Finder sidebar have disappeared. Hope that's generally the case for others.
