To the OP: I mostly record music. How are the fans on this thing? Do they run quiet to the point that they are inaudible? How much sound do you think they make? Right now I'm still running on an old G5 and the fans are terrible. I can't record anything with it. Thanks!

hmm for some reason i thought the 27 would look HUGE next to the 24...thats kind of a good thing, seems like it just simply got a little wider and thats about it.

It went from 16x10 to 16x9 screen ratio on the new iMacs. Instead of being more square they got wider, which is great for movies but a bad choice for a computer screen imo, at this screen size. It helps with side by side documents though, but I would prefer the 30" screen at this size.

The resolution is much finer in this revision so you will see more on the screen, but that also means you have to sit closer to see more as it's more detailed.

Frankly, the 16:9 doesn't look good at all next to the old 24" iMac. 16:10 looks far more usable. Guess I'm in the minority.

I also prefer the 16:10 , but it's obvious most monitors are moving to 16:9.

I tried to find a monitor for my macbook pro at local stores... pretty much no one had a 24" 16:10 at a decent price. They were all 22"-24" at 1080p.

Ended up getting a 25.5" 1080p monitor, looks like crap, but it was cheap and I got used to it... but it made me realize how great the iMac screens are. I did want the 24" led cinema display, but my macbook pro has no display port.

Gonna go check out the 27" in person, and will get one when the i7 is in stock.

EasyRider,

Let us all know what you think when you
come back from the Apples store.

from the other pictures it looks as if the 24" is a couple inches in front of the 27"

The fans on this computer are near silent. I am pushing it right now and it is making almost NO sound at all. I used to a have your computer and it was a noisy bastard.

Here are some more angles of the two taken on a MUCH better camera.

Your 27" looks wonderful in the photographs, thank you for your efforts!
Are you experiencing the blotchiness that has been discussed here?

Guys I just came back from my local apple store to have my MBP battery replaced and I spent a good hour playing with the new imacs.

They do not disappoint.

The screens are absolutely gorgeous.

I opened four terminal windows and ran "yes > /dev/null" on each. I opened up itunes and i ran the visualizer in full screen (27" model) at the same time.

I got the imac as hot as i could get it and I couldn't hear the fans. The top left corner is where it got hot and I was alot cooler than my MBP when it's on full load.

I can't wait to give the quad core i7 a spin because I just might pull the credit card trigger on it!

Enjoy your great machine OP :)

Thanks for the update. Yeah, my G5 has never been a very quiet machine. Over the years though it has gotten noisier. I have been waiting for word on the fans in the new iMac before I make my purchase. So far everyone seems to be saying the same thing. thanks for posting the pics.

My screen seems to be flawless. The only complaint I have is that a small piece of dust is trapped under the screen in the top left hand corner.

Here are some side by side photos of a 24" iMac and the new 27".

so the 27" is just a little bit wider than 24"
it seems to be acceptable then.
I am worried about something else. would it be overweighted? Somehow I feel like this monster will break my table(thinking too much?!)

RE:

Are the pixels smaller on the 27", than they are on a 24"?

Or, are they the same, or perhaps even larger?

For most younger folks, this isn't an issue. But.....
...As one grows older, slightly larger pixel sizes make for a display that is easier to view (without changing the native resolution).

Most 24" displays have a dot pitch of about .0270 (in inches, I believe).

Dell's 27" display has a dot pitch of .0303.

Does anyone have the number for the new Apple 27" iMac display yet?

- John

The size of the screen increased by approx. 16%. The number of pixels increased by approx. 60%, so the pixels are a fair bit smaller and accordinly the dot pitch is denser.

Is it possible to move the screen (the actual glass bit)? Considering it doesn't have the aluminium next to it it would seem like you could slide it :p. And can you please hook your PS3 up to it, I am very interested in seeing how it works with the PS3.
