Even when well and truly used. Updated to HS only Sunday, but is it not risky when 400GB used of 500? Can't mess things up can it

I have never seen it causing anyone any issues when enabled. It just changes how it writes data and how it moves it around going forward. Enabling it doesn’t cause any rewrite of current data in the moment.

I say all this with almost 100% confidence but you should search here. Lots of threads on it. Also, do you backup? I use CCC to clone my internal drive to a bootable FireWire drive. Peace of mind.

I really should sort that out shouldn't I? It's just a terminal line isn't it. I'll search what it is for HS. I tend to shy away from Terminal as I've no clue what I'm doing, Refer back to MhZ

It used to be
Code:
sudo trimforce enable

Not sure if it still is. I have a Samsung 840 EVO and have TRIM enabled...

The ONLY place you can buy an OEM battery outside of Apple is from Rewa.

Even then, Rewa doesn't always stock the OEM part.

Anybody else headquartered outside of China/Taiwan doesn't have access to Apple OEM parts. Apple doesn't sell the OEM parts to anybody but themselves and ASPs. The English-speaking websites like iFixit, OWC, and B&H simply don't have the SE Asia connections like Rewa does in order to source the real OEM part.

Thank you JPack.
Where does this info about Rewa being the only one to distribute OEM parts come from ?
All other "OEM" parts are then fake ones ?
Just curious :)
What do you mean by SE Asia connections ?
Thx !

I have a genuine eBay Apple battery that is over three years old. I think I chronicled it in this thread. Didn’t even install it when I saw the age. You can have it if you pay shipping.

Hey Larry,

Do you still have that battery? I'll take it for shipping! Checked that original seller om ebay and its out of stock.

Let me know please?

Went through the same crap with the apple store as you.

Ps, you battery is draining faster because of the extra ram, according to apple

Anyone know where i can buy a OEM a1278 or compatible battery? Ebay and amazon are flooded with clones. I don't want it to expand and ruin the case and touchpad. My stock battery served me well but its getting old in the tooth.

I tried the links in this thread, and even asked a few people if they would sell me theirs...

Someone help please!

Hey sorry to not reply sooner. My current OWC battery is draining fairly rapidly so I think I am going to hang onto the eBay battery.

Thanks for the tip on the ram. That could definitely be the culprit of the fast drain while using. Did they say it could be the culprit when the machine is closed and supposedly sleeping? That’s been my issue. I do only get a few hours of use from 100% which can definitely be the overclocked 16GB of RAM

I am looking for a battery replacement for my Non-retina 2012 13" MacBook Pro.

To the folks who got MacBook Pro batteries from eBay (e.g. @hallux and @LarryJoe33): are these ones (https://www.ebay.com/itm/A1322-Batt...13-A1278-Mid-2009-2010-2011-2012/352581708711 and https://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-OE...1278-Mid-2009-2010-2011-2012-NEW/263815205346) similar to the ones you guys got?

It says "Genuine" in their description and the sellers seem to have a good reputation, but there appears to be just so many of them on eBay that it makes me really skeptical about their quality. I'm not sure there would be so many original Apple batteries floating around out there.

Assuming they are counterfeits, which one would be the next logical choice: IFixit's or OWC's?

They can be genuine, but they may be B-stock. There's no way to tell. I bought some batteries listed as genuine for a 2012 and 2009 MBP that I have in my lineup. They certainly LOOK like they're genuine. One works flawlessly and one might have a problem. I don't know if it's the battery or not in the one that has problems because that 2012 MBP isn't in the finest health. I saw no issues with the battery when I first installed it though.

I'm not sure I'd want to pay the OWC or iFixit premium for a 2012 machine. There's no guarantee those will work flawlessly either. I've had mostly good experiences with OWC batteries in the past, but one of my shortest lived batteries also came from OWC. It was in the same 2012 that's still having power management issues despite the new apparently genuine battery. It lasted less than 12 months and 10 discharge cycles before it started swelling.

I think you're ok with eBay battery sellers. Just make sure you buy from one with a long history of good reviews.

Buying batteries has become a crapshoot, no matter who you buy from.

Too bad Apple doesn't understand this enough to continue to offer OEM replacement batteries for older models. There -is- a market for them!

This does not look like the real deal Apple battery. Still may be worth a shot. It is a crapshoot.

Talk about disappointing, I went with iFixit based on reviews and recommendations here. Got the battery Friday. Installed it, conditioned it (charge, discharge, charge). Battery drops from 65% straight to 7% consistently. I am on four cycles of it doing this and the design capacity per coconut is down to 85% of original. SMC PRAM reset.

I thought I was paying a premium for a quality battery. What a piece of garbage. iFixit has been unresponsive to boot.
My Amazon battery is back in and I am out $100 bucks at the moment. Buyer beware of iFixit.

Moral of story, should have just had Apple do it (which I will now).
[doublepost=1520940081][/doublepost]This is the battery iFixit sent me, just at a $60 premium:

Not sure what you are asking. The ifixit battery was not a $40 battery when I bought it.

For stuff like batteries and tech items, it seems that you can often get the same items for less on eBay. For most tech items that are generic 3rd party issues, I almost always go to eBay now.

My mid-2011 Macbook Air battery has had it, checked my battery with coconutBattery. The battery has an age of 2,787 days. Has a Full Charge Capacity of 4466 mAh out of 6700 mAh (66.7%) with a cycle count of 662.

After reviewing this thread, I decided to try my luck on a used "genuine" Apple battery off ebay.

I decided to go with seller cnytechsales, because all of the reviews looked good and they listed the number of cycles (in ranges of 100) for the batteries they are selling.

I got a used battery from cnytechsales with 100-200 cycles on it for $20, free shipping.

After I get the battery and install, I'll provide an update.

Got "new" battery and installed it. Here is the comparison between my old battery and "new" battery.

Old Battery.png

"New" battery looks to be a genuine Apple battery and has 163 cycles on it and a capacity of 6702mAh out of 7150mAh, which is not bad for $20.

Hi Larry, my 2013 MBP also needs replacement and I've been looking at OWC. Do you mind giving an update on how your battery has been recently? One of your last posts mentioned that your OWC was draining rapidly, which is a bit worrisome -- was hoping you could provide more details about that. How rapid are you talking?

Hey there, sorry to not reply sooner. My battery health is still very solid per coconut battery, but it does drain from 100% to zero in about an hour and a half. I think though this is because of my overclocked memory. My machine is really fast, but at the expense of fast battery drain.

As far as OWC saying their 65 Watt-Hour NuPower is 'Up to 50% more capacity vs. original Apple factory batteries'. From users on here, is that actually right? And on my early 2011 13", is the '65 Watt' what I need? I don't understand that wattage stuff, What was the original one?

There are sites here in the UK that swear blind the battery they sell is OEM, but it's less than half the price of the OWC one. So I'm guessing no matter what they claim, it's probably incorrect at that price if it's under £40!
So, is OWC a fair bet.

My main question here which I hope someone can answer, Is it true that a poor battery makes the fans work harder when looking at YouTube? If it was a new battery are the fans less likely to work as hard. I don't see how that equates, but sure I read it?

Can anyone help on this please?

I’ll try my best. I have the OWC Nupower and it does not last any longer than an original new battery. I wouldn’t put too much stock into that claim. Related it the 65 watt spec, it’s definitely higher watt than OEM, but probably makes a small unnoticeable improvement.

I don’t think there is any correlation to the fans running and the battery other than the fans killing the battery sooner. If your CPU heats up because of intensive processes, then your fans kick in to cool the machine. Battery has nothing to do with it to the best of my knowledge. Batteries don’t give off heat while discharging.
