Since i did over the air 8.1 do i Restore my Iphone in Itunes to factory settings then update some how from there?

Download the full 8.1 IPSW an in itunes shift-restore (win) or alt-restore(mac) to restore to 8.1

Do a back-up first though!

Why is this? What difference does it make if you update through iTunes vs OTA and how does it affect jailbreaks?

I updated my iPhone to 8.1 OTA the other day, but I don't understand how that would cause an issue with jailbreak after the fact. Thanks for any info in advance!

Because, with the exception of the Pangu iOS7 jailbreak, none have worked on OTA updated devices.
And for the Pangu iOS8 jailbreak, it is now noted NOT to use it on OTA updated devices.

I see TriJetHero already addressed this.

Will this simply 'update in place', or is this effectively a wipe and restore from backup situation (budgeting for time).

I had no issues with OTA updates and jailbreaking with Evasion 7 (even though many did), and of course with Pangu on 7.1.2, I restored my earlier 7.0.6 jailbreak fresh to JB with that.

But I would hate to count on my OTA working and then have Apple release a .1 update before Cydia is released. Unlikely, but still.

That said, all things considered, it wouldn't be a big deal, as iOS 8 has a lot of the features I jailbreak for. SwipeSelection has been a key thing for me in the past, but since I use SwiftKey a lot, including the swiping typing, I don't think that'll be a big deal. Only real thing I do enjoy is theming as far as remaining tweaks I've used in the past, as most of the other tweaks are part of iOS 8 now (widgets in the NC makes weather on the lockscreen not needed, as well as some other tweaks, BioLockdown isn't really needed for many apps since individual developers are adding TouchID to their apps, etc.)

I'm still deciding whether or not I even want to jailbreak this time around. I probably will, but it's not a shoe-in. (I like having OTA available to me...it's so much less of a hassle).

Still rocking my iPhone 5 w/ JB but just iTunes updated the g/f's 6 to 8.1. My 6 should be here on Monday per UPS (ordered 9/23/2014 :mad:) and I will update the same way, via iTunes.

So excited for JB to be close to release. Hopefully Saurik can get MobileSubstrate and Cydia jiving soon.

Does anyone else have an issue where the JB app doesn't recognize the phone? I have an iphone 6 and using the v1.0.1 Pangu App. On top in red letters I see ?????????Touch ID????????

Great news!! The question is when can we get Cydia

So, windknown has contacted me, about a half hour ago, via e-mail. He has told me one of the issues that is keeping Substrate from working on the device, which will probably require me to build a little binary patch for dyld as part of the Substrate installation sequence. This was the worst possible day for me, as I'm traveling back to Santa Barbara today (I'm currently in Texas, having come here to give a talk at The Big Android BBQ), which means this will take me a little longer than I'd like, but clearly getting Cydia and Substrate working on iOS 8 is my highest priority. I thankfully think that I actually can start working a little on one of the Substrate issues using an iOS 7 "model" based on the information provided by windknown, which means I'll lose less time to not having all of my devices with me. (I currently have no clue why Cydia itself is not functioning, but will find out later today when I can see it myself.)

His response.

Jaibreak

So i did the OTA update. I want to be all setup when the offical Jailbreak comes out. Do i just do a backup of my phone and restore from that back up? Or do i have reset settings and then do a a restore from my back up?
Thanks
Mike

Yeah, backup your phone on itunes. And restore it to 8.1 and it will restore it from the backup you made. OTA tends to screw with things. Pangu even said this time its better to update using itunes.
Good luck Jacob!

Considering they're Chinese and they are in it for the money, I am shocked to see them not holding off the JB for a few weeks to a month to ensure more of their countrymen (and others around the world) have an i6 / i6+ in their hands before exposing the exploit.

They are giving Apple a head start on patching this thing before a usable version is actually released.

This is the fastest JB released ever. Correct if i am wrong

I'm pretty sure it was too...

Roughly one month after launch, and several Genius bar swaps later, glad its all happening now. The hardware novelty wasn't beginning to wear thin coming from iPhone 5 (which the wait for felt like forever at the time) a month in, but this is PERFECT.

I'm really anxious for Substrate and Cydia to get updated and to get the ball rolling

I plan to update my iPad and iPhone to 8.1 and wait for the fixes to Cydia and MobileSubstrate. Apple could potentially push an 8.1.1 update which closes vulnerabilities (assuming Pangu used a vulnerability which opens the door to hacking or viruses) and stop signing 8.1 in a hurry. I can live with stock for a couple of weeks to ensure I'm on 8.1.

I'm wondering why they released this jailbreak prematurely without a substrate or Cydia. Surely Saurik must be closer to releasing these components than we think. Otherwise it's a burn of time and exploits.

This initial release is for devs to test and update tweaks for 8.1. Once Saurik updates Cydia and substrate, it will be usable for end-users. Honestly, unless you're a dev, might as well wait for any potential hiccups to be squashed and proper cydia updates before JB'ing

Because now that iPhone 4 doesn't have ios 8, there wasn't even a tethered jailbreak for devs to test/make tweaks. This gives developers time to test and make their apps/tweaks so when jaikbreak+cydia package is released, the developers would have already had a start on updating their tweaks.

My guess is the jailbreak+cydia version will come out within a week.

I know both of these things. I just hope Saurik doesn't drag his feet too much, otherwise 8.1.1 could drop tomorrow (unlikely) and there goes the 8.0.0-8.1.0 exploit ...
