Keychain is close as a solution but lacks:
  • supporting intelligent fields so you can store passports and driver licenses and autofill the information at websites
  • forcing me to use a different method to store credit cards and that method won’t store the CVS number.
  • working with sites that have one name for its app and a different one for the website
  • not being cloud storage agnostic. I won’t use the fragile icloud.

I'm only new to Apple and I have the iPhone 14PM. I have my passwords encrypted/locked independently. I have a couple of questions...

1. Is the option switch in Settings: Passwords and Keychain in iCloud 'OFF' by default? (as I may have accidentally turned in on?)

2. When I experiment and do have it 'ON', I feel like someone has taken control over my phone when I go to create a password on a website. The iPhone takes over and autofills in a long password, which I'd prefer to enter in myself. I have so much to learn about the phone, so any positive advice, would be welcome. - thanks.

I have used Apple Keychain since it has been but because I still have a foot still in the PC world I needed something else. I used Lastpass for years but they were purchased by LogMein and than ruined. I switched to Bitwarden it works very well with Apple Keychain

You are always given an option, you can allow Keychain to generate one or like me use Bitwarden to generate it. The advantage of Bitwarden is it is cross-platform, Apple, Android, Windows, Linux, etc. Any password you use can be manually entered into both password managers.

The lacking of features kind of makes sense
  • Not having intelligent fields can be understandable due to the fact that keychain is strictly a password manager. It holds usernames/passwords. They're also promoting their apple wallet to hold your license
  • Apple has a different product for credit cards - Apple Wallet so of course its going to not make things even more confusing when it comes to their product holding passwords not supporting credit cards
  • This issue can and does trip up many other password managers. 1Password has issues with my banking app
  • Being cloud agnostic makes perfect sense, since Apple is all about keeping its customers walled in on their platform
I understand your points and I won't really disagree, but that's where other products do a better job, so why use a poorly featured product that forces you into different methods/tricks to get around its short comings when other password managers offer seamless integration and features?

Dashlane for now.

Quite satisfied, Multiplatform (I have 2x Macs, 1 pc, 1 android DAP).
However, they increased the price like 300% in my region and my license expires in Jan 2025, so I need to find something else before Jan.

Thinking about Bitwarden...

for 2FA I use 2FAS

I've actually been doing some research on Bitwarden for the past few months, planning to switch over soon. It's a very nice app/service and is free for personal use. It's open-source, provides secure encryption and has import/export options for vaults. The one thing that was holding me back was lack of cryptanalysis data.. but that lack of data is a good thing when it comes to this type of app/service.

Have you tried their integrated Authenticator? It's in the $10/yr plan.

Tho I feel quite comfortable with 2FAS, I wish I had something faster to autofill without having to go to my phone each time (2FAS has an extension that copies, but it sends a notification on phone and you need to approve it/ select account).
