I want to get a 9.7 pro and have been watching the refurbs. Thought Id wait for this update but am slightly concerned it will be massively underwhelming and all the gen 1 refurbs will get snapped up.

I'll doubt they'll bother trying to reduce the weight on the 12.9" version, as it's not really supposed to be that portable.

I could be wrong though.
We're talking about the product designer of which #1 goal is to make something thinner. I think there's a good chance the 12.9 would weigh less. After all, it's a feature, right?

I was in the same boat - except the 12.9 - after waiting, I decided the deal on a refurb is better than the discount on 1st gen once the update gets released. So I ordered today, arriving tomorrow, and I'm not worrying about it anymore.

I wish I was you. I get education discount as well which muddies the water somewhat though.

Meanwhile I'm sat here watching my iPad 2 (yep, 6 years old) struggle to lad email.

I feel bad for you guys. I made a post here in January about whether I should buy iPad Pro or wait until March. I ended up taking advantage of a $150 off sale and pulling the trigger in January. And I'm very happy I did. I think waiting for Apple products is less reliable then it was a couple of years ago.

I'm with you on that. I have saved a TON of money by holding out a bit before buying. But...
There are those who are more interested in owning the latest device than in getting a better bargain for their money. For those people, buying the current gen, even at a significant discount would result in buyer's remorse when the next gen is released a few months later.

Neither is better than the other, just a matter of personal preference. That's why I try to encourage people to figure out which category they fall into and go with that. :)

I don't see why I'd need to upgrade. So far all that's rumored is a faster soc and maybe different bezels. No new screen, no new pencil features (except for a dumb clip). Current 12.9 is plenty fast and if I can't notice any difference in my painting and drawing apps, I'll stick to the current Pro.

I have my fingers crossed for some news at some point tomorrow.
Maybe even event invitations.

Come on Apple, give us something!

And which of the staff of Apple's design team are you referring to? Last I read about them they had a dozen or so members on the core design team.

Same here. My 12.9 does everything perfectly. It'll be a keeper for a couple more years.

There's really one one way to make it weigh less with the state of technology and advancement out there currently..to reduce the battery.

And that is the last thing I want to happen!

To reduce the battery up to 50% and more, Apple would have to implement constant wireless charge which changes the way we think about charging devices. That with oled display could cut the 12.9" iPad weight in half...

Listen to yourself...constant wireless charging?

Even if you could do that, what happens when you take the iPad on the road, etc. You still need a decent battery.

Looks like there coming apple chat said to check back on Monday and they should have information
That employee is most likely referring to an impending invitation rather than product as that's grounds for being fired. Invites for an April event would logically go out next week.

As far as the updates....as a happy 9.7 Pro user the only inticing product would be the 10.5". But if I had an older iPad , ALL sizes would be a huge deal. The 9.7 is a little powerhouse packed with even more tech in some cases than the larger Pro. But while I've been a happy iPad user full time now for a couple year I think the only way to gain momentum is on the software side....even though I'm mostly happy with iOS aside from some bugs.

I just want Mini Pro and to make the Pro include the Pencil. Or drop the Pencil price. The Surface Pen lasts months without a charge, has more functionality and costs $40 less. AT LEAST include a proper way to carry your Pencil like the Surface does.

It'll be interesting to see if they keep the exact same weight/dimensions and just spec bump internals.

With 50% smaller battery you still get about 5h of continous usage, right? Those who need longer usage time without any power source could use external power bank, solar charger etc. What do you mean by getting iPad on the road? Car? Woods?

I bet 99% of iPad users have some power supply nearby within 5 hours. In a car, at workplace etc. People who live isolated without electric source are a different story.

With constant wireless charge, I mean "charging" without you even knowing that your device is getting power. That changes the way people think about "charge" and you would never have to worry about putting your device on a wired charger again. You could stop even thinking about how many % you still got left of your battery. Electric is available everywhere nowadays (atleast for some people, I dont know about you tho) and we could use it with more seamless, better ways.

This means smaller batterys but much less battery waste, lighter and cheaper devices, more room for the internal improvements, less exploding batterys, safer devices, less electric shocks from faulty wired chargers, better waterproof and shock resistant (lighter device means allways better drop-proof), etc, etc...

If the new iPad to debut w/a 5hr battery, Apple would hear it from the users.

May suit you fine...but thankfully, you are not the norm.

If Apple decide to put smaller batterys to it's devices someday, they do it regardless what people tell them. Just like with removing of The floppy, SCSI, optical drives, VGA, heaphone jack etc.
