For me, it's the opposite. Apple pay is making debit cards obsolete. No need to carry 4-5 cards; instead transfer cards into Apple pay (if possible), then carry around 1 card (just in case the contactless portion of the card reader isn't working)...Waving a credit card next to a card reader has made Apple Pay obsolete.
Apple pay on both touch-id and face-id enabled phones works very well (especially so with touch-id). The touch-id enabled phone allows you to have Apple pay ready as you're taking your phone out of your wallet/purse.
