Hi trifero,
What app do you use to measure temps?
I got the 970 in and it's benchmarking about like everyone else. Around 2700.
I want to see how the new Heatsinks are doing.

I don't have any empties either.
Let me know how your temps are, when you get the heatsink installed
At the end I haven´t installed the heatsink. I have speed up the fans and now temperatures are nice.

Hi trifero,
I've got DriveDX installed, and I can find the window like the image in post #3081,
but I can't find a way to display an image like the one in post #3082.
Is is from a different App?

@tsialex is correct, as usual. But I put that picture for you to see the fans speeds. Istat does not show temperatures for PCI slots, as you can see.

Hi trifero,
Here's what I have, did not do a pre-heatsink test.
No fan adjustments.
Any comments are welcome

Anybody have good experience with the SSD7140A?
https://www.highpoint-tech.com/gen3-nvme-m2-non-bootable

I'm pretty tempted to pick one up cause of the whole 8 extra slots lol. I did also look at the OWC Accelsior 8m2 but the 7140A says that it it can get 14K MBs vs the 12kMBs from the 8m2.

Any thoughts/recommendations/suggestions from the peanut gallery?
The difference between 12 MB/s and 14 MB/s is probably just benchmark or OS or filesystem differences.

The OWC is a gen 4 card so it can be used to get full speed from gen 4 NVMe - up to 7000 MB/s for one NVMe, though a gen 2 slot will be limited to 6000 MB/s.

Nice speeds and nice temperatures! However, consider to use BlackMagic in bucle, and see in DriveDx how change temperature.
Thanks trifero,
That's a good idea, I was just happy to see I Hadn't screwed anything up, and everything was running as planned.

I do want to see what happens when things get hot.

I'll run it when I get some time and report back, too much paperwork everyday!

Anyway, if your daily use does not include continous manipulating big files, like heavy videos or audios files, dont´t worry at all. You have now an excellent mac!

If only mac would update to gen 4 lmao. This is such a first would problem lol, ohhh I can only get 14,000 MBs instead of 28,000 MB/s woe is me.

Basically, the PCIe gen 4 switch of the OWC 8M2 gives you a PCIe gen 4 x8 slot in a MacPro7,1 or a PCIe gen 4 x4 slot in a MacPro5,1. In either case it's actually eight gen 4 x4 M.2 slots if you decide not to raid the NVMe. Each NVMe can perform at full speed while the other NVMe are idle.

I have no idea. I just went into disk utility and format as AFPS. Didn't see any option regarding those.

I believe the factory default is 512e. There are tools online that you could use to convert to 4Kn which is what Apple natively uses for its NVMe SSD/drives. Converting to 4Kn will primarily yield better random read/write performance than 512e drives but I would like to see actual benchmarks of third-party 4Kn drives setup with macOS.

If you're curious and want to test, make sure to have a working backup as changing disk formats results in all data being wiped out.

For some reason, there is zero information online about whether the SK Hynix P31 Gold NVMe drives comes factory default with 512 emulation or 4K native sector format. Not on their website, in the PDF Manual for their Drive Manager utility, nor in their Product Brief.

I only found one post on overclock.net that may indicate the factory default is 4K native as the user got a "mismatched sector size from 512 to 4096" error message when attempting to clone to their new 1TB SK Hynix P31 Gold using Macrium Reflect in Windows.

Either way, there is one blog post I found which confirms the SK Hynix P31 Gold NVMe does indeed support 4K native sector format, though the performance is only marginally better than 512e, in Windows 10 at least.

Most blades ship with 512-byte emulation as default with few supporting 4Kn. I saw few google results on users converting to 4Kn with Windows and macOS which somewhat confirms the drives ship with 512 emulation.
