Just a heads up to those who haven't yet upgraded to PdaNet version 1.40, it seems as 1.40 is a trial and after a set amount of days only HTTP connections are allowed (basic websites only, can't even access HTTPS (secure) sites). This means that instant messaging programs or any other computer application that requires an internet connection will actually be blocked (i can confirm this) until you purchase the full license for $29.00. I don't have any idea what the time constraints are but eventually you will be notified through PdaNet that you will only be able to access HTTP sites.

While I will say that $29 is worth it over time for most people for this wonderful app, I did feel a little blindsided by the absolute lack of information regarding having to pay for PdaNet in the 1.40 changelog, as it has always been glorified for being free. It's a bit misleading, especially when there is no mention of having to all-of-a-sudden shell out $29 on the JuneFabrics site or the Cydia pages. It seems to have worked, as over 60,000 people have upgraded to 1.40 most likely unaware (JuneFabrics is noting that 1.40 is a "significant" improvement over 1.33, though i fail to see how) that they were upgrading to something that actually LACKED more features than the version they had previously.

Now don't get me wrong, i definitely support programmers/devs, but i think doing it in this way under the pretense of an update to something that has always been free and then going "HAH, GOTCHA, NOW YOU HAVE TO PAY IF YOU WANT TO DO WHAT YOU WERE DOING BEFORE!" is absolutely the wrong way to go. They could have at least put forth the effort to warn users/potential users about 1.40. I will probably end up buying this anyways later on, assuming it drastically improves from 1.33, but right now i do not see 1.40 being any different. Anyways, take it for what you guys will, I just feel a *little* betrayed even though beggars can't be choosers (well i guess they sort of can, as i have now gone back to version 1.33 so that my connection is not limited in any way, shape or form and i can go back to what i had before).

Grrr I cant install it today after restting my phone las night.

Getting the size error in cydia. Looks like issues with the apt.modmyi.com source.

Any one else able to install from that source today?

Are you serious?! 30 bucks for this program??? While useful, I cant see myself spending that much...

nope get the same thing

Yeah, definately looking for version 1.33...

and a way to install it. I agree it's a great program but not giving people the full story when upgrading is a crock.

Where did you get this info from? I don't think its fair. If I buy this app. Will it work on both my phones for $30 or do I have to buy it twice. This is so messed up.

Obviously the Dev has been paying attention because AT&T is going to charge $30/month for tethering.

Still this is dissappointing as I only use it in an emergency for 10 minutes a month.

would anyone who hasn't upgraded, or who kept a copy of 1.33, upload a copy and let us know how we can go back to the old version?

Why is everyone so concerned. Some facts are:

a) We aren't sure that 1.40 is actually a time trial.
b) We are definitely not sure if 1.33 is a time trial too.
c) 1.40 is the first version to support vpn? Big benefit for me.

finally if you use it. buy it. If you go to the cheesecake factory do you tell them, Food is cheaper at home? or it should be priced the same as KFC?
Eh. I love the cheesecake factory and their cheesecakes.

No, but the price is on the menu when you purchase the Cheesecake, so you know what you're getting into before you decide if you are really hungry enough to eat a piece. That is not the case here if there is indeed a time limit that was not publicized.

a) I am absolutely certain 1.40 is a time trial. Wait a while, it'll eventually come up. Also, it's happened to people over at the ModMyI and Howard forums.
b) 1.33 is not a time trial, neither were any versions before it as i used them tremendously longer than 1.40 and nothing ever came up to notify me. In fact, we might as well have considered ourselves "beta testers" with the older versions as they worked to improve CPU and battery draining/overheating issues.
c) Correct, 1.40 is the only one with VPN support and makes the program absolutely worth it for you if you require it. Again, i am not against paying for the program, but against the method in which they tell people to upgrade to a "significantly improved" version and then lock people out of what was originally free without any sort of notification.

Cydia should remove it on the ground of deceit, and Installer should add it on that same ground.

If you want version 1.33, do a google search for "modmyi repo." Click the first link you see, then click "debs2" (or 2debs, or whatever). Scroll down until you see pdanet1.33.deb, right click it and save to your computer.

Then, SSH that into your phone and drop pdanet1.33.deb into /var/root/.

Using MobileTerminal (get if off Cydia if you have to) type in "su," then type in your password, which is "alpine" by default. Then type in the command dpkg -i /var/root/pdanet1.33.deb. Wait for it to get done.

Then restart/respring your phone. This method works as of 11/13.

Hey OP, at what point did PDAnet notify you that it was just a trial program? Did you receive a prompt screen or something? I'm just wondering b/c I haven't utilized the app since downloading it from Cydia a few days ago...

Yes, after a few days it will give you a prompt when you are using it saying you are limited to viewing only HTTP sites and will have to pay $29.00 to fully utilize it. Many people have confirmed this across various other forums. I suggest you downgrade to 1.33 while it's still up in the repo.

OP: sorry i am new to openssh. i have a mac and use cyberduck. i connected the phone and i dropped the pdanet1.33.deb file into /var/root/ but it is not on my phone. am i doing something wrong? thanks!

Read the above instructions again. You actually need to install it using mobile terminal, which can also be had through Cydia. Follow the installation instructions above.

Wow, this is awesome that you found out how to revert back to 1.33. This workaround should be made available on Cydia - not that I don't agree with the developer charging - but because of the sneaky way it was done, I think people should have a choice.

I haven't tried this workaround yet but it sounds like it works. Let me know if it is successful for anyone else.
