For iPhone, I always go with the highest capacity as it is my computer on the go. iPad I’ve found 256GB to be a nice sweet spot as my iPad never leaves the house and is mainly used as a living room couch device And local storage just is not very essential.

How would you even backup a full 512GB phone?
iCloud? :D

I have a 512GB iPhone 12, but I could currently fit in 256GB. I currently have 279 GB free. That would leave me with about 20 GB free if I had 256, and that is starting to get too close for comfort. I might even go over before I upgrade my phone in the fall.

I have a very large photo library (73K photos) and a moderately large downloaded audio library (23K).

I got my 12 Pro Max in 512GB because I never want to worry about running out of storage. I have over 11K of downloaded songs, a ton of pictures/videos, and apps. I have about 180GB free, which leaves me more than enough room to accumulate more as I intend on keeping this phone for another year or two max.

I do download Apple Music etc to my phone over my wife, I do have unlimited cellular and we have 4/5G almost in every town but after the road it’s not so good coverage.

so I prefer to have it in the phone just in case :)

I did it just because I could 😁. Seriously I just wanted there to be no questions about running out of space. Both of my iOS/iPad devices were at 128GB and the iPad was not that full(30-40%) but I decided to get the 512 GB phone and store all of my downloaded music there. Right now my phone has about 50 GB of storage used and I still have a LONG way to go before it’s full.

512gb is useless. 256 is understandable. 64 is perfect for me.

While I am fine with 64GB I do like more storage. I would download movies and I already download music for offline use. Depending on data a lot to stream isn’t worth it when you don’t have WiFi and you don’t want to abuse unlimited data. If money wasn’t a factor 512gb would be great for me but I’m happy with the base model in this case a 128gb iPhone 12 Pro

Music and photos are my biggest storage hogs. I prefer to have my data locally. I also like to have around 100GB of free space as a buffer. I’ve heard people say you want to have 30% of free space at all times. Have also heard people say take your current storage, double it and get the capacity that’s closest to that number.

I can fit within 256 and have 40-70GBs if I don’t download any movies/shows and mind my apps, but I prefer the piece of mind—especially since I intend to keep my 12PM for at least a couple years (hopefully lol).

Well, I always went with the base storage model in the past, but at the same time I tend to keep my phone for at least 3 years, sometimes 4+ (current one is 4y 6m) and what I have found every time is that for the first couple of years I don't have a problem with the space but with more time (3rd or 4th year), I have to start deleting the content (apps, photos, videos, music …) to make room for new stuff which tbh, I do not like. Also, it seems like a good idea to have your files locally because I have experienced it multiple times that on the road (while travelling) there are long stretches when you are out of network coverage (or poor coverage) and it is difficult to stream something. I think when Apple releases its new phones, the base storage option they provide is only good if someone plans to keep that phone for a max of 2 years and then upgrade (and chose a bigger storage model based on his/her latest usage pattern), but if someone wishes to keep the phone for 3-4 years (like I do) then it is best to go for the higher storage options. So, this time I am contemplating on the 512GB or maybe even the 1TB model.

I take a lot of pictures and especially a lot of videos for my work. I slowly increased the capacity when the files became bigger. Usually 256gb was enough, but when I had to replace my broken iPhone X recently, the 512gb option for my iPhone XS Max was only $10 more, so easy choice,

High end iPhones are disposable high quality video cameras that fit on drones.

You may think they're expensive but vs. say, a Red camera they aren't.
Interesting thought .. but the quality of a RED camera cannot be compared to that of an iPhone or can it? Or I guess what you are saying here is though, that the camera quality of a drone is inferior to that of an iPhone hence your argument..

Because people do shoot video with their phones, 4k can eat up a lot of space. Multiple clips there you go.
Or people just like to spend money on chit they don't need. ?‍♂️

Right now I'm using 170GB on my 13 Pro so I have the 256GB option. Next time I upgrade (probably not until 2025) I'll probably get the 512GB version because I'll have more videos, photos and maybe more games. I use iCloud but I like to store photos and videos on device as well.

I purchased 512 for my XS Max then. Tbh I like to get the highest storage available, as I don’t upgrade the phone annually and just for peace of mind if I’m the future I’d ever need more storage. I am now on 1TB with my current one.

do you anticipate a lot of ProRes video capturing?

Not quite, but you're likely willing to trade a little bit of quality you'd lose in the output process anyway for catching some dangerous/sketchy footage without damaging your expensive cameras.

i went for the 1tb just in case. turns out in 6 months i've got ~200gb of 4k prores vidoes + proraw photos. about 40gb of music, and another 20gb of lidar scans. i probably would've been fine with the 512 but i don't want to upgrade my iphone until 2025 at least so i figured buy once, cry once.
