A quick grab from the recent flooding in the Grand Canyon. In the wrong place at the wrong time for a vacation. Right place at the right time for photo opps:

Glad to be out though!

A shot from my first outing with my new Rebel XSi w/kit lens. Only adjusted the exposure a bit in iPhoto. Have to say for my first DSLR, I am really impressed with it. Definitely like the added control over my old p/s. Though I figure I will need to pick up something that allows more raw adjustments over iPhoto. Like Aperture or Lightroom.

Thank you, Furious. I like it too the way the curve of the swell is more revealed from that angle... the surfer loved it so everybody's happy! I'm so glad to be shooting from the water now and then - it was very hot this day and quite refreshing to be in the surf shooting.:)

This is a sample of dunes life before T.S. Fay... be back to report what's left tomorrow!

Are the proportions right on this? Is there a rule of thumb about how much foreground/background there should be?
Looks OK to my untrained eye. See this.

Main reason I bought a dSLR (ok, I've always wanted one but main excuse I could use to justify the expense to the wife) if that every 6 months she trots the kids off to a studio to get family portraits. I would like to try that myself, so here is the first attempt. Lessons to be learned; get lighting and a proper background, otherwise I'm quite happy.

I just got my very first DSLR today. It is a Nikon D40. I'm a beginner to photography and would love some advice.

Went for a walk through the botanical gardens right before closing...

So I always have a really hard time with these photo's

If this was digital, mind posting the exif?
unless I should LATE in the evening, I can't get my shutter slow enough, without over exposing.

I would love to get my hands on some ISO 25 slide film
