Wastwater, yesterday...

Incredible shot, AlexH. I love the leading lines in the grain of the wood.

Trying out my new waterproof Olympus TG-2. I was happy with the results while snorkeling, but I think I'll have to invest in a strobe if I want to take it diving. Maybe I can somehow combine my two most expensive hobbies (diving and photography) into one super-expensive hobby!

Nowhere near as good as yours, but this was the best I managed to grab at lunch today. Every time I got near that butterfly it would fly off. As soon as I put my camera away of course, it sat nice and still taunting me!

The focus isn't really right either in mine but as I said it was the best of a bad lot in 10 minutes with the camera.

Wonderful photo, I wish I were as good with action shots. You should submit this in this week's photo contest. :)

Thanks a lot, i appreciate it. Just practice, practice, practice. The better you know the sport (action) you're shooting, the easier it is to capture the stuff. Sports is more about knowing the sport than knowing your gear. :D

And for the 20th..

I really like this photo and keep coming back to have another look at it. I enjoy your shallow dof photos and your ability to make a compelling picture out of the (sometimes) mundane. Good choice of book with the decorated page—it wouldn't have worked half as well with something plain and everyday. The first thing you notice is "The spells were very powerful" which, of course, grabs the attention!

This 35mm 1.4 lens is at the top of my wish list! I wasn't certain at first given I've got the 18-55 but I love it's shallow dof capabilities and I very much enjoy shooting that way. The curve of the page gives the picture a kind of lensbaby look!

Here is one from last Sunday.

Hot Air Balloons in Infrared by FriskyFreeze, on Flickr

This is really interesting to look at. It's got a really surreal feeling to it.

Did you have a colour filter on when shooting or convert in post only using one of the colour channels?

Here is my shot. Really need to get myself in a neutral coloured room with a decent monitor as all my scans are coming out all over the shot colour and exposure wise... Not a happy bunny.

As always, comments appreciated!

As the caption mentions, this was taken with an infrared camera. A few years ago I bought a used Nikon D80, took it apart, removed the IR-blocking filter and inserted a 720nm IR filter instead. Voila! I have a dedicated IR camera with TTL metering and framing.

Here is how the same scene looked with an unmodified camera:

It was shortly after sunrise so the morning fog did not dissipate fully yet, though the IR camera cuts through the bulk of it (which is why I love using it when taking landscape shots from an elevated point of view to cut through the inevitable haze).

@Melizard, thanks!

@Ish, I do enjoy trying to make something compelling out of something ordinary. I love the 35mm 1.4. It's my go to lens. It can focus quite close, has pleasing bokeh (to me, at least), and is very sharp wide open. I love primes.

It's a bit ironic really as when I had my first SLR I just had a 50mm lens and would have loved a standard zoom. Now I have a standard zoom and would love that 50mm equivalent! :)
