I always wondered what's this all about.

Started in Paris I believe (might be wrong, that was the first place I saw them). Young love places a lock on a railing - typically on a bridge signifying their unbreakable affection for one another and throw the key away. The problem is when a few thousand have been put up and it causes structural issues on the railings as we are seeing in Paris now. They are even getting them engraved now with their names.

Oh well, guess I'll never get that crazy romantic that a lock will signify my affection. Tough luck Mrs.

Romantic intentions or otherwise, just another form of mindless vandalism in my (clearly romantic) opinion. Expensive and sometimes dangerous for someone to remove at a later date and in many cases just an eyesore. Enough of Mr Grumpy ranting....

Wherever I hang my hat...
Took the night ferry to Ireland for a late-summer jaunt. I'm in Rosie's Bar, in Ballydehob; go west and the next stop is the USA! Here are some whale-watchers heading out from the harbour in Baltimore. I'll hopefully have some better pix to share over the next week or two...

Enjoy. I've never been to Ireland but I hear it's wonderful for landscapes. Looking forward to seeing the results.

As shot by my D7000, I was too lazy for any kind of processing aside from cropping. What I would have loved to show is how huge the corona really looked like. Unlike in the photo, it was about 20x the size of the sun itself, extending way out across the sky.

I have not seen a rendition of that anywhere online, I guess it really pushes the dynamic range of even the best cameras.

I found these on London Bridge. Seems to be quite a widespread phenomenon.

Or a really paranoid BT engineer? lol...

Yes I think it is an issue in a number of places. The one I posted today, you can see there is a railing been put up in front of them to stop people leaning on the railing the locks are on. I imagine it is for fears of structural integrity.

Dangerous it may be but very well done AFB.
Diamond ring just before totality.

These are really nice eclipse shots. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong gear. Waiting patiently for 2024...

There is going to be one in South America in (Southern Hemisphere) summer of 2020. I'm thinking it's as good a reason as any to check out Buenos Aires.

Neat! That fellow sure has lots of colors and a crest too AND red feet. The ladies must go wild. :)
He did actually put on a performance for the ladies, which I didn't manage to capture as we had the very young nephew with us and he was gripping my hand rather firmly as we walked along admiring the various birds. Next time I'm there without him I'll try and catch the antics.
