Another headshot of that crow who keeps coming around..... I opened the sliding door to shoo him away and to my surprise he still stood there on the railing, so I grabbed the camera and fired off a few shots while he obligingly posed for me. I decided that since he's a black bird, it would be effective to give this the B&W treatment.

Here is one of our monarch caterpillars. We are hoping they don't start to form the chrysalis until sometime after Friday. Allegedly they will cocoon from the top of our net box, and we are worried that they'd fall off in the car ride home. Although truthfully I think the car would be a lot safer than if it cocooned in the wild with storms and predators. Who knows. So far all 11 caterpillars are growing. My daughter is hoping that we get five butterflies by the end of this.

She did a project like this in second grade (in class) and only 1-2 out of like 20 made it to butterflies because apparently there was a bad virus of some sort that year that affected butterflies. We don't know of any viruses this year and clearly the caterpillars are doing well, so fingers crossed.

The top is the head with the longer antennae, and we are amazed at how much poop these guys produce. I was not expecting that! We also saw some of them shed their skin today as they grew.

A Garden Spider waiting for it's next meal on a Lavender. I captured this shot in my garden using Canon 100mm L Macro but hoped to get closer so went indoors to get my extension tubes, upon my return it was nowhere to be seen, I guess they're quite shy!
These are the most common orb web spider in the UK and they're often found in gardens, hence their name! They are greyish-brown with a white cross on their back and spin their famous spiral webs! They sit in the middle of the web waiting to feel the vibrations of a struggling insect in the sticky threads of its web. They then rush out and wrap their prey tightly in silk to stop them from moving – finishing the job with a venomous bite! This may sound scary – but they are completely harmless to humans!
Although they can bite humans, it feels a bit like a bee sting but only if they are threatened, mostly they will avoid human contact. I'm sure that is reassuring to some of our regular contributors!

Good god man. I hope you had a long lens! Evil buggers.
Not a very long lens on a Fujifilm X20, equivalent to about 120 mm at max zoom. The hornet was busy a couple of metres above me, and not bothered by action in the pavilion below. I stood on a table to get the shot. In general, don't bother them, and they won't bother you.

I have been stung by a hornet a couple of times when motorcycling, however..... Very painful.
