I love Common Grackles. When I say "love", I know that it comes with the baggage of them being described as "nasty noisy things" along with European Starlings and other "bad birds" :). They're migratory here in Colorado, at least in Denver, and they show up every April like clockwork and nest in a spruce tree near our house. We have 6 weeks of their incessant "squeaky gate" sounds - and it really does get on your nerves - but we also get treated to their courting and mating displays, their beautiful iridescence, their "demon eyes", and watching them raise their young. They are great parents. Love 'em!

Had a surprise visitor to the lake this morning -- a juvie Cormorant! (I can't help wondering if this guy is related to Frank, the cormorant I photographed a few weeks ago...) I spotted him out the kitchen window and immediately ran for the camera and the 100-400mm since I wasn't sure I'd have time enough to set up the tripod and the Bazooka. Also he was pretty close, anyway. He leisurely swam around for a while and then ducked under the water and -- voila! Came up with his lunch.

Look, Mom, I caught a fish!

Looks like he’s found breakfast!

A glimpse through the entry to the inside of an old church ruin I found in the hills on Monday! This place is magical, covered in ivy and surrounded by trees, you can't see it on Google Earth or if walking by, which is probably what has saved it from damage by vandals and idiots. It's the sort of place where you expect to turn around and see a fairy run off into the undergrowth! No prizes for guessing where the next few days images are coming from for me.

Another Joshua Tree shot at night on 8/14/20. Some light pollution from 29 Palms Highway 62 at the horizon, but it allowed my 35 mm lens to capture the foreground with acceptable noise. Wide angle perspective distortion is minimal with 35 mm with trees not too bent on the sides

The pollution adds to the ambiance
