Getting ready for Monday's launch of the Artemis rocket. Destination - moon, but unmanned testing - and due to its power, the neighboring National Park where this was taken will be closed for the launch. Otherwise, it is a great place to view, hear and feel low orbit rocket launches.

There are a couple closer on the drive, but this is parking lot #1 of 13, from the elevated walkway over the dunes. Will post from a closer ground level roadway pull-off tomorrow.

Dang! You are lucky to witness the history. Amazing and inspiring stuff! Please keep us updated with the 🚀 rocket launch. I’ve been waiting for the 🚀 to launch. It’s almost time.

Are you able to go to the other side to watch the rocket or is that area blocked off? What does it feel or sound like when it’s going to take off? Is it super loud and stuff? I’m guessing it is…
While it is powerful, but unmanned - and over 200000 people expected to view, I may not go but watch from home (40 miles away) or perhaps birding wetlands (20 miles away). With them closing the National Park where those photos were taken, the closest - and historically the closest as they always blocked the bridge to the National Parks along the north edge of the NASA property, is US 1 along the Intercoastal Waterway with a 5 mile unobstructed view over the waterway. Then there are the viewing stands at Kennedy Space Center where news media broadcasts, but expensive and by lottery. Then further south is Cocoa Beach with a similar 5 mile view but one time was viewing from the pier with low clouds, missing the launch as a giagantic cruise ship exited the port. The 5 mile viewing are great with a 600mm lens...which unfortunately, I don't own.

The biggest issue with US1 and an 8:35 AM launch is photographs are into the sun washing out the horizon and finally getting blue sky as climbs in altitude. From mid-day on and definately evening, it is great. That is why I like the National Park or Cocoa as shooting north/south along the coastline, not east into the early sun. I have actually heard and felt the launch from my home 40 miles away, with the sound time delayed and heavy vibration. It is weird to watch the birds start flying as the sound and atmospheric change arrives.

While Starlink - launches are quite common - with one planned a couple days later AND can be viewed from the park if during their normal hours, there is also a manned flight to re-supply the Space Station a few days after that. Will have to check the launch time as may go over for that.

I remember Playalinda! Is it still (partly) clothing optional?

There is a sign as you enter letting you know that the last parking lot, #13, is clothing optional on the beach. Likewise with the last parking lot from the New Smyrna entrance (the roads don't connect so two separate areas).
