Harbour Snowy Owl

DSC_7103-L.jpg

It gets a bit chilly at times but with the owls returning, I do enjoy winter photography.

Seems like ages since I've had any new content. Anyway was out at the weekend at another local National Trust place, Baddesley Clinton.
This squirrel hung around long enough for me to get my 70-200mm out of my bag, which was nice.

Not the greatest of pix… but this ‘pilgrim rabbit’ was carved nearly 700 years ago in a Yorkshire church. When the imaginative author of a very famous book tried to tell the book’s first illustrator how he wanted one character to look, he pointed him towards this carving.

A competition for you all. I need the name of the author, his pseudonym, the title of the book… and the name of the illustrator… :)

I originally thought he looked like Peter Rabbit, but then you mentioned then author was a 'he', so now I think it looks like the rabbit from the Alice in Wonderland books. So I'm going with Lewis Carroll. I'm refusing to use Wikipedia as I want to know if any of our members know if that was his pen name, or what the illustrator's name was?

I refuse to go online for this so I went to the library in the basement and found Alice's Adventures in Wonderland tucked between Dante and Voyage of the Beagle. Author true name is C.L. Dodgson (Lewis Carroll). Illustrations are by John Tenniel. The author's name is signed in script, so my spelling might be off.

Books Rule!!

We have a winner! It's a very modern-looking rabbit, considering its great age...

Hah, I just got home from work and a new lens had arrived! It's a 35mm for my Nex 5n! I'm selling my other lenses on eBay and I'm just planning to use this lens for the next six months to try and become and a better photographer - I've never really worked at that part in my shortish adventure into the hobby, which sounds ridiculous - I only take photos when I go somewhere nice, probably once every 1.5 months! So now I want to try taking photos all the time to get better. So I unwrapped the lens, stuck it on the camera and had nothing to take a photo of! It's dark outside, so I switched the lights on and took a photo of the cooker! Haha it's sharpest photo of a cooker around!

That's a good plan, enjoy that lens and focal length.

I hope so! I'm glad it has your approval  I've read a few composition books before - just re-reading them now - then I'm going to see what Lynda's photography courses are like!

If anyone has any composition books that they've read that they thought were brilliant, I'd love to hear about them - Christmas is coming up ...

You've probably read Brian Petterson, but I found this one useful.

Great catch

Thank you. I've been on MacRumors for years, but never ventured to the Photography section until recently. Comments are always welcomed as I've just started the hobby over the last year. I have a lot to learn!

Just got my first DSLR a few weeks back. Still trying to get used to it and learn all the features, which I'm sure will take a while. I'm definitely having a lot of fun with it though!

Another from the weekend. This is Baddesley Clinton. An interesting house. Apparently 9 priests hid in the basement back in the day. Unfortunately to get there, they had to climb down the toilet waste cavity space in the wall.
