Took this today whilst waiting for the actual subject to try on, what felt like, the hundredth outfit of the day. I think it was my favourite shot of the day.

Thanks bud.

Yeah in retrospect I think you're right.

As a bit of a smack in the chops, Mrs MacRy got a text from her friend asking for the RAW files so they can have a go at editing them. A bit rude I thought and dented my confidence a bit.
Hahaha...glad I didn't ask the same. Not that the thought ever crossed my mind. o_O

:)

That wouldn't have bothered me though - professional photographer asking for them and I can learn something. Makeup sales person asking for them.....not so much.

Yeah, that's fair enough. One of my MUA's fancies herself as a retoucher...she's not. Conflicts have arisen and I tend to use other MUA's now. :)

By all means though, shoot me a message with a dropbox (or similar) link and I'll have a play with the raw file if you like.

I don't think the forum will allow me to type what I said ;)

Someone asked me for a print. I told them it would cost £60 to get printed and framed. They said I am not a professional, why is it that expensive? Think they were expecting either "I am flattered t =hat you like it, here have it for free" or a tenner.

Errr... Because that is how much it COSTS to print and frame it! That includes nothing for my time or wear and tear on my gear or expenses incurred in going to the location...

Who are these people that think a digital image is free even when brought into the physical realm?

These people who think that because we don't make a living from it, that they therefore don't think anything of asking us to give them our property. What if we said give me your car. You aren't a professional driver so that's ok isn't it?

Wow! a solid score of 11 on the "1-10 Jealous I didn't take it" scale...

Yeah that is a cracker isn't it

Thanks :D

Incidentally, it very nearly was 'scrapped' to the depths of my SSD - until I revisited it the next day with a clearer mind. I'm still not 100% happy with something about it (the grad line) but as my wife says, only I notice these things. I think she's right.

On a side note I see what you are all saying about selling prints. I sell a few of mine and I literally 'make' around between £5 and £10 per print. I only frame images to hang in the places that feature my work, or in the case of where I'm exhibiting. As a result, the cost goes up. My first exhibition back in August had a commission rate of 40%. I had to mark up my prints AND frames to absorb the cost. Still managed to sell a few right enough.

I'e just had a woman message me on my fb photography page to order a canvas of that image you just commented on. She declined after I said the canvas would cost me £71.60 without postage. I was going to take £75 with P&P on top. I don't see that I'm greedy or anything but some people do expect images to sell for a low price generally :/

I think they expect them to be priced like they get from Habitat, Ikea, B&Q etc. They don't join the dots to realise that they are low quality (printwise), mass produced overseas and generally, not got any emotional attachment to them. So when they find out how much a REAL print costs not just the obvious cost of workmanship in the frame but the cost of printing using proper inks on a proper printer onto proper paper that wont fade in the sun in a year, then they get fright.

My brother in law and a friend of ours, they sell their prints in the range of £600 - £4,500 depending on the edition and series. This is the cost of going out on location and like you say, the sell four in ten aspect means they have a lot of costs to recover on a per print basis.

It is small volumes high margin vs large volumes small margin...
