Testing out a used Pentax MX-1 I received yesterday. Composing in black and white is pretty sweet since I can still shoot in RAW. It's a very different shooting experience from regular color

Thanks AFB, I tried to frame up something along the lines you suggested but there was too much 'junk' over on the right. Short of getting my feet wet, this was the best I thought I could do. Still trying to get to grips with a 20mm focal length: I know it's not ultra-wide but framing is a little more challenging for me at least. I will have a look and see if I can crop for the composition you suggest. Many thanks again.

I remember when I first shot with my 10.5mm. Kept getting my feet and hat in the shot!

Took a photo of my colleague at a conference today. He clearly posed nicely for me.

He doesn't look very happy about it though! :)

You'll all be keen to know how Moondancer is faring, of course... so I visited her the other day. Not much of a pic, but I was just relieved to see her still afloat at her mooring, bobbing about...

It's been a while since you posted a Moondancer picture. Glad to see the recent storms haven't blown her away.

Unfortunately didn't try the food - too many other places to eat in the time available: focussed on a number of pizzas in Manhattan and Brooklyn!

So many places to eat at when in NYC! I've only eaten at that particular place for breakfast, but we liked it enough that we go back there for at least one morning when we are in the city.

Didn't comment on either of your posted pics with the ultra wide lens. 20mm is challenging to shoot. Wider than around 24mm (or maybe even 28mm), things start to get weird regarding perspective. If the lens barrel isn't parallel to the ground, vertical lines converge fairly radically. Near-far relationships also start getting pretty weird at ultra wide focal lengths. My personal opinion is that you have to think quite a bit more when using these lenses--they are fairly unforgiving to even minor changes in camera position. Put another way, small changes in camera position (in either the x, y, or z axis) result in fairly dramatic changes to the composition. Have to play around quite a bit with them to learn how best to exploit their properties. You can shoot ultra wide lenses with the intent of "getting everything in." You can also shoot them with a very close subject with the intent of exploiting perspective creatively. Up to you what you find interesting/pleasing.

My pic for the day:

Congratulations to climbers Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson for successfully scaling the Dawn Wall of El Cap. I took this photo this past February from the south side of the Merced River. The Dawn Wall is apply named as you can see it bathed in the light of the rising sun in this photo taken in the early morning hours. As you can see it is sheer granite without the deep crevices seen on the face blanketed by shadow.

Enjoying a meal with the in-laws last night. My niece and brother in law.

She looks happy to be photographed. The exact opposite of my daughter. My dad recently asked for some good photos of my daughter. Given I'm now known as a photographer in my wider family, it was a bit embarrassing to say I had none.

Ironically she spent most of the meal glued to her iPad and I wanted to get a shot of that but she suddenly went into posing mode as soon as the camera rested on her.

I would suggest bribery to get some photos of your daughter ;)

Tried that. Don't think I helped when she said she couldn't have her picture taken due to spots. When I sugested I could edit them out, she thought I would photoshop her!
