Awesome :) :)

How do you get such perfect shots time after time?
Are you on location waiting for hours, or is it just luck?

A couple of weeks ago I was out on some local marshes I frequent, and while I was driving, a marsh harrier hovered overhead (well within shooting distance), then it was gone. A few minutes later I was getting out of the car and a heron flapped over close by then went into the reeds and hid while I was getting the camera turned on.

Cheers :)

No ones that lucky. Cheese & Apple lives in a bird hide in the middle of nowhere.
I hear you on missing the wildlife. They always seem to know when my camera is not around. I was out the other day, and a bird landed near me on a branch. I reached for my spare camera as it had the 70-200mm on, but I'd left the battery on charge. Of course he didn't wait around for me to change lenses!

Shot this in a marketplace in Cambodia. I like the fact that it looks like a model catwalk despite it being a busy, sweaty market. :)

Awesome shot!

Feels like it has a bit of an HDR feel to it, have you boosted the shadows?

The fog that descended pretty quick. Just after this, lost the sun completely!

Comments always welcome.

Seriously great shot. I think there is an option to go quite dark and contrasty with this PP wise.

Here's an oldie from the summer but I've only just got round to looking at.

As always, comments welcome.

Going in for the kill. Great timing.

Thanks guys.

Hugh, I'd say it's a combination of persistence, luck and practice.

I do spend a lot of time in a given area. Once or twice a week for 4 to 5 hours each day (I'm very stubborn and determined). There are many days that I come home with no keepers then there are days like when I get lucky.

This hawk has a territory that's not that large. He stays around a conservation area where people feed song birds seeds and nuts. The nuts bring the squirrels and the squirrels keep the hawk full and content so he's not hard to find about 50% of the time.

The luck part of it happened yesterday. Normally, he's in a forested area perched in the trees waiting for an unsuspecting meal to wander by. With all the branches, it's very difficult to get a clear view let alone acquire focus when he flies through the trees. Yesterday he flew through an adjacent clearing where I was walking to photograph cardinals, spotted a squirrel very close to me, came in and grabbed him.

And...with a lot of practice and more missed opportunities than I care to think about, I've learned to be ready for just about anything.

Either that or AFB is right. :)

Keep trying Hugh and never give up.

Thanks for the explanation - I don't have so much time on my hands (yet - 3 years to go), but I get out as much as I can.

I suppose both camera gear and experience count for a lot; I have better lenses now, just need more time.

I'm not giving up and I know I'll get something one day.

Cheers :)

Hugh

My girlfriend and I recently took road trip to Hollywood, and parked our big truck right on Hollywood Blvd.

Last we heard you were a budding sound man with a healing back and now you're in a big rig from Texas parked in Hollywood? I know the moneys good, but watch out for the bumps in the road.

Camera gear does help. I know all the popular concepts that it's not about the gear...it's about the person behind the camera and that's true to a point. When it comes to wildlife and birds in flight type thing, good equipment does help a great deal but it's not everything. I've got a buddy who shoots with very basic and inexpensive equipment but he gets great results because he's even more stubborn and determined than I am.

You make me want to cry for missing my young days. If only I had a camera then... Struggling to type meaningful words right now... Can't think why....

Incredible.

No more comment needed.... :)

I'm still doing stagehand work, I've just moved up quickly! I got picked up by an LED video company and am now the lead tech on a tour, I setup 7 screens for a little over half of the US LPGA tour stops. The job includes driving to and from the events, about 12k miles a year. It's 6-months of work per year with a few other random gigs thrown in the mix, the above picture came from one of those random gigs.

The company knows that my girlfriend and I used to team drive together, so when they needed this truck to get from Dallas to CA and back to Dallas in a hurry, they called us up and flew us out for the trip. The truck pulls the worlds largest mobile "HD" video screen at 19x33 feet. We took it out to CA for the red carpet walk for The Hobbit premiere.

Here is something I shot over my Thanksgiving weekend trip.

Photo of the Day January 2015

Wanted to try out my new lights in daylight and kill the ambient with the shutter, so like a teenage girl with an Instagram account I thought that an arms length selfie was the way to go.

Fantastic shot - really very good, it wouldn't be out of place in a nature book, say, something by David Attenborough.

Fantastic photograph; wonderfully atmospheric.

 Thanks. It starts with a drafty house and sub-zero temperatures (it's my bathroom window). I used a macro lens and did some contrast/color adjustments in LR.

Good enough to hang on the wall...

Thank you!

Welcome to the thread and that is an awesome shot! Looking forward to more from you :)

Thanks! I'm looking forward to posting more.
