AFB, you got your lens…nice!

Just wondering what metering method you use. Matrix, centre-weighted or spot. This shot looks well exposed for the overall shot. For a dark coloured subject, the bird looks underexposed with too much detail lost in the deep shadow.

Shooting a dark subject may result in an overexposed background buts that's ok if you want your subject to show clearly. If your subject is the bird's overall environment, that's a different story.

If you haven't, try spot metering. The metered spot will move with your focus point on the D750. Meter and expose for the subject only and let the background be what it will be.

Spot metering for wildlife and matrix metering for landscape generally work well.

Well black birds are called that for a reason!
I was using centre weighted, but will give spot metering a try. Although shooting manual I guess it doesn't matter as much?
Thanks for the tips though (I could use them!).

You're welcome.

FYI, metering method will play a big part in exposure even shooting manual if you're using the camera to meter. Your three primary exposure settings are set manually based on what your camera is telling you through the viewfinder to get the meter at roughly centre scale...in most common cases.

Yes I use the camera for metering.
Does anybody do anything differently these days?

how are you linking your flickr pictures to the site?

Go to flickr website and view the picture.

When it is on screen, in the bottom right of the picture, on the black background, there are four little icons.

One is an arrow pointing up and to the right. It is the share button.

This brings up a white box with tabs. The right most one is BB Code. Click that tab and copy the contents of the link text

come back in here and paste that into your comment.

You only get the arrow on the full web version of flickr, not in app or mobile.

hope this helps.

Thanks. I was trying out an old Jupiter 8 lens I've got knocking about that I hadn't used on the A7 previously. Seems to be ok.

OK? OK!? it rocks man! seems anything in your hands is a winner! Seriously...

There you go! Now you are finding your groove... Tripod shot? Beautiful...
Thanks. No still hand held. I got the tripod out of the car today, so will share some more when I get the card out of the camera.
I liked the bokah on this for a 5.6 lens. Good enough for me.

Seriously not being fake here but really like this. Looks like a cracker of a lens and getting handheld like that a couple days out of the box... It has some real potential ahead.

Probably not in my hands, but yes it is a nice lens, especially for the price.
Would like to take it somewhere a little more interesting than my dinning room though!

I thought that was the point of a long lens? So you didnt have to get up and move more than an arms length from your beer no? I think I have been doing it wrong.

Pick an image in your photostream and click the icon I highlighted.

Then pick and copy this code. Paste it into the MacRumor Reply window. There are other sizes to pick from.
