Fantastic image with a striking composition. The bit of land that juts out to in the foreground breaks up the diagonals and helps to bring your eye to the brightest part of the image. The graduated dark transition from the foreground and from the clouds at the top help to frame the image and create a great balance.

This granite erratic has been deposited on top of this rather large second granite erratic, presumably millions of years ago. The larger rock was probably the size of a Ford Fiesta.

Oh wow! that is beautiful. Lovely colours and superb detail. Man, this one scores high on the "wish I could take that " scale!

Oooo.... that is screaming out for a black and white conversion, drop the exposure and pull up the highlights to make it look scary... I dont know how you keep the heid walking round there of a night! very intimidating!

Thanks, the Galloway Hills are very barren to the point of being a true wilderness - with a limited palette of colour all year round. This is itself a bit of a juxtaposition because the limited palette actually adds to it's photographic appeal rather than suppress it. When there is good light, the landscape comes to life, especially with how it interacts with the rugged, yet flowing terrain that is interspersed with numerous glacial erratics, lochs and streams. It's a part of the country that is very often overlooked by photographers in search of the bigger, dramatic highland scenery up North - along with the photography-tourism honey pots. I hope the Galloway Hills stay that way to preserve their mystery. I never saw a single soul the whole day I was there.

Here is a map (complete with walking routes) showing the location of this shot (purple arrow) and the one I posted previously of the Tree and Loch Valley (red arrow).

I never thought of trying B&W, thanks, will have a go sometime :)

Funny but I've never thought of the docks being intimidating, and there are some far worse and out of the way places we visit in the dark.

Cheers :)

Met up with some folks in DC to do a photo walk this weekend. Pretty neat to observe, learn, and network with people from the area.

I enjoy beautiful / interesting landscapes as much as the next person (and I've rediscovered how much I like hiking) but I also definitely enjoy people watching and sometimes interacting with them when I'm out and about. Every now and then I'm forward enough to chat them up and get their permission to take their picture. Your picture reminds me that I should to take pictures like this more often. Thank you.
