Slowly, since I bought the Nikon 610, I’ve been weaning myself off the idea of using a tripod for every shot. It was a bit odd to start with, since, for the last 5 or 6 years, I’ve associated a tripod with ‘proper’ photography. It’s freed me up a bit, and it’s one less thing to carry. Maybe I’m my own tripod now: taking extra care to avoid the slightest hint of camera shake (the 610 helps in that respect, since I can bump the ISO up - two or three stops - without any apparent loss of definition)…

I know what you mean. I probably leave my tripod in the car 75% of the time. The only exception is if I'm planing on doing macro or slow photography. I was looking at carbon fibre tripods, but I'm not sure the weight saving is justified by the price, or I'll take it out any more often.

I haven't been around of late but found myself with a modicum of free time the other morning. I stupidly thought to myself, how hard can a little Street Photography be?! It's a heck of a lot harder than I ever thought it would be. I nearly fainted getting this image, I jest you not.

Thanks Kenoh. Yes, people are a bit of a nuisance when trying to take photos- don't they realise what they are doing to my composition?:) I must admit in this case I was ambivalent to their presence but not in others...

I actually think they give a sense of scale to the pier. Sorry, @kenoh.

Yes, takes a lot of nerve to get started. I always think someone's going to shout at me.
I'm trying to get more bold, but it ain't easy.

Cheers :)

Onkaparinga Estuary, November 2013.

My very first long exposure, using a screw-on Hitech IRND 10 stopper, with an el-cheapo variable ND filter stacked on it. I highly recommend that you don't buy cheap filters, it randomly degraded the image quality because of it being made and cast with cheap plastics. I'm really glad that I used a custom white balance and a ColorChecker card for this one, it brought the true colours out instantly in Lightroom, after going through the export to the ColorChecker plugin and then activating it for this image. This is nearly a nine minute exposure and so was the capture of the ColorChecker chart.

A butterfly for today.

I'm really enjoying my 105 mm macro. I'm able to get so much closer than the 60 mm macro I had. With the 60 mm you had to be on top of the thing, which mostly meant it flew away. This is an un-cropped image, which you simply couldn't do with the 60. I think this is my current favourite lens.

Yes, much sharper than my butterfly above, but then I was on a 300mm lens from further away :)

Cheers :)

Very strong clouds, @Hughmac ! Almost straight out of a Renaissance painting. If I was one for digital image cheating, I mean making composites, I'd keep them! :p

Thank you sir !!

The camera on my phone is not bad - this and others from this area were taken whilst waiting for my wife to come out of an appointment. There's a little shadow / highlight pp but not much.

Cheers :)
