A happy 4th for Mr Hawk. Not so much for Mr Squirrel.
Howdy, I enjoy your imagery and it's always interesting to see Portrait mode used on things other than people, which still seems to be a bit hit and miss by the way it has randomly chosen what to keep in and out of focus in this image!Xs portrait mode, edited in photos app

Your cat does not look happy!
I love the 200-600 and am definitely keeping it even though right now I'm not using it as much since I've got the other lens now. I haven't experienced some of the AF issues that I've been hearing about with the A7R IV and the 200-600mm. Maybe I'm lucky! Or, more likely, when I have a poorly focused image I tend to blame it on user error: wrong f/stop used, too slow a shutter speed, too much camera movement, etc., etc......
Now that I've finally gotten the Wimberly Gimbal for the tripod, I should get more "keepers" with the Bazooka, as I won't be trying to support it on the deck railing, clutching at it with one hand while trying to focus and shoot with the other. Also, thanks to kind folks here who offered some suggestions when I mentioned some issues with the TC, I've made some settings adjustments which have made a difference, too, and I expect that will also benefit me when I do use the Bazooka, either with or without the TC. It had been years since I'd shot with a long lens and at that time the longest one I had was a Nikon 300 f/2.8. I'd kind of forgotten some basic techniques and principles of shooting with long lenses.
Right now we don't have a lot of geese or other wildlife swimming around the lake on a regular basis, just occasionally, so haven't used the new setup out on the deck except a couple of times. I do want to try the 1.4x TC on the Bazooka, as that should give me even greater reach, which at times I have found that I need, even on this small body of water.
How do you like the A7R IV? I absolutely love mine, it is one fantastic camera and I will say, hands-down, the best I have ever owned and used. Now if only I were skilled enough to really use it at maximum advantage, since it is capable of so much, much more, than I've even attempted.
Croppability is one big reason that the A7R IV appealed to me, as I do tend to crop fairly often, and particularly when shooting wildlife or subjects which one cannot control, it's useful to be able to crop out extraneous bits that wind up in the image. Sometimes one just doesn't have quite enough reach, sometimes it's a matter of not noticing something until it's too late, etc.
The TC definitely does seem to make a difference with the 100-400mm so I know it will have some impact on the performance of the Bazooka, too. Just haven't gotten around trying it out yet. I know I would never attempt to put a 2x TC on either of those lenses.
I absolutely adore my A7R IV and am so, so glad that I bought it!
With 100400 and TC - By difference you mean sharpness, AF performance, or both?
How would you compare sharpness and AF speed without the TC on 200600 and 100400?
I haven't yet tried the TC on the 200-600mm (AKA "The Bazooka"); it has so far only been on the 100-400mm. As for the differences on the 100-400mm with and without the TC I would say I've noticed a little less quickness in the AF performance and occasionally sharpness, but then again I don't know if that is just user error or an issue with the lens/TC. I did have to adjust some settings which hadn't occurred to me in the beginning, so that was a big difference right there!
Thank’s! Yes, I was interested in bare comparison of 2 lenses (Without the TC). Some say 200600 seem to be a bit less sharp than 100400 @ 400, while adding 1.4x to the 100400 kind of equals both. Anyway, I am very satisfied with the sharpness I get out of this lens. If something goes ‘wrong’ and the picture is ‘valuable’, Topaz AI is capable of doing wonders in some cases as well.
P.S. Bit less sharpness and slower AF seem to be a natural consequence of using the TC, so no user ‘error’
...And I also would not try 2x on any lens it supports. Maybe 10k primes are fine, but that’s not for me I have seen some crazy videos where people use 1.4x + extender tube + 2.0x on GM, and still get some good results.
I get the idea even if it didn’t work right. My favorite 360s are at the summits of mountains when I’m exploring via google earth. Pretty amazing stuff to see what it’s like up where I’ll never go!A mural from the Wonderwalls Port Adelaide Festival in 2015, by SMUG ONE, an Aussie born artist, now living in Glasgow, Scotland.
I'm not sure if embedding a 360 photo can work here or not, but we'll find out, hey! ***It appears not!***
