As I was walking out the front door of my condo unit yesterday afternoon, I realized that I had an unexpected photo op right there, as a sparrow was perched on a post on the staircase leading to the next floor. For about a half-hour or so I had a fun time shooting not just one, but a couple of sparrows as they came-and-went. Unfortunately the lighting wasn't good -- I was in the dimness of the entryway of the building while the birds were usually backlighted. Once in a while I did luck out, though, and got one in a position on the open steps, where he could be seen a little more clearly:

Looks like he brought his own dinner.

These scenes are reminding me of some Star Trek sets. Very alien looking.

Butterfly casually hanging around on the flowers. There were three of them. Luckily they stayed in one place so I could get some shots.

Love this, Chris! This one is a survivor, you can see where a bird had a nip at its wing on the bottom left wing section! ?

Oops did we?! Can’t remember!

Maybe a little paint and it would be a good rental.
I reckon a little Builders Bog first though, just to fill the cracks...

It's perfectly placed for some Milkyway shots as the centre is rising directly behind it until the end of this month! Will have to make a trip there when the moon is playing friendly. Gonna check it for rising times now...

To Photoshop or not? One an inviting landscape, the other brings life to it. (I know only one picture per day, but these are almost identical, and that's the point.) View attachment 932140 View attachment 932141

I am pretty much in the "always photoshop" camp. ?

The slight difference between the two makes each photo tell a very different story. So the real answer is what story are you telling?

I second the investigating the storytelling aspect of the image further too, for me there's too many things going on currently in both for there to be a clear story being told. Please, don't take any offence at that, none is intended. I am a great believer in simplicity when ever one is trying to tell a story with a photograph, unless complexity is part of the narrative!

The addition of things (including people) may not necessarily make an image better, sometimes it just adds another thing in the image.

I'm really interested to hear your intention with the image and the addition of the person there.

I am no expert, just a keen amateur who enjoys a good dialogue about photographic structure.

This one was a toss-up, while the one (single photo) I will post tomorrow was definitely take them out - in fact had a good time drowning them with the cloned water. :D How dare they mess up my photo!

With this one, while true is busy and perhaps could tighten removing the steps, I do like the way the stream bends, suggesting more. The intention was tranquil landscape that is soothing, relaxing, and wanting to be there with a nice good book enjoying the solitude. With her in it - AND HER BACK TO ME - it drives home enjoying the solitude of the open space. Alternately, it also says - Taken, you snooze, you lose. If she was facing me, then would have been out of there ASAP.

I loved hearing this from you! The way that we as individuals are moved by a place we experience is a gift, in my eyes. That is a truly unique and individual experience too.

My thought was to remove the foreground, the bend you were enjoying! Then you have the stairs leading to the character present, leading us on to wonder whether they will venture in to the water and then which way will they go? We follow across the frame from left to right in a pleasant manner.

For an image without a character present, maybe the removal of the stairs could help tell the story of the place, the coolness of it, the lushness of it.

Maybe?

I look forward to the next instalment!

If the story was about the reader, then you might also consider changing the color of her outfit. to me the blue is a bit glaring in the serene setting, I would prefer something more muted for a story about reading along a stream.

Truthfully this is part of the reason why I stopped photographing my own kids; when they got old enough to have a strong preference for clothing, I never liked whatever they chose for photographs (too bright, too much logo, etc.). I don't often change colors of clothing in a photo, but if you have no affiliation with the subject and just liked her posing, then you can easily just alter her outfit also.
