Nice photo! You reminded me of the movie Rush Hour. Have you seen it, LOL? If not, highly recommend it!

Thanks! I saw that movie when it first came out. It's probably time for a re-watch!

Ahh! thank you for pointing that out and clarifying it. Perhaps, Alfred is eating small insects and malls around, then.

Herons are carnivores that eat fish, small mammals, insects, crustaceans, and reptiles. Herons eat fish, frogs, small mammals, crustaceans, reptiles, and even other birds!

Is it a problem that they are eating animals? That's what they are designed to do.

I have a feeling fish 🐟 is not his only meal. That might be his favorite meal but I think he's finding food from elsewhere around the lake. Preferably all the aquatic vegetation like you mentioned.
Yes, herons -- Great Blue Heron, Green Heron, Night Heron, etc., all eat more than just fish. While they probably do nibble on greens, as I have seen Alfred do occasionally, when hungry they also will grab frogs and even small goslings or ducklings..... Each year in the past we would see a family of four or five ducklings.....and the next day maybe there would be only two or three. A predator got them. Not just pointing the finger at herons, though; we have other, larger predators around here as well, including a couple of big turtles. There are also creatures who don't live in the water but are near it a lot, including raccoons.

Some carnivores will occasionally munch on some greenery, perhaps to get a bit of nutrients they are lacking. I know dogs and cats will do it. Our cat tries to eat any plant we bring into the house, and it typically doesn’t stay down long. I don’t know if that is just because they shouldn’t eat certain plants, but I have heard of people glowing a small pot of grass for their cats to munch on.

I'm glad you brought this up. I went to a bird site a little earlier and that site said Herons absolutely do not eat plant life. It did mention that different types of Herons eat more of one thing than another, but they were adamant about the no plant life. It surprised me quite a bit and then I got to thinking about how they just gulp whole things down that gullet - maybe plants wouldn't work with that system of consumption.

Dogs eat grass for multiple reasons: https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/advice/why-does-my-dog-eat-grass/

My mother would always would say it was to help digestion.

The last trip to Africa resulted in one of the most incrediable opportunities of my life. We were tracking a pair of lioness most of the morning. The decision was made to swing a wide circle and see if we could get in front of them. Ninety minutes later walking towards us was the holy grail of Africa, a white lion. She was one of the 6 remain wild white lions remaining on the planet. The brown color on her is Cape Buffalo dung, she and her sister were pairalleling a herd of them in hopes of making a kill.
