Clever! Next it should be dispensing alcohol 😊
Doesn't look like Alfred, but like a juvenile heron . Really beautiful photo!
Thank you! Oh, actually it IS Alfred, a mature GBH -- he just had his wings and body at a very awkward angle in this image. He looks really skinny here and I can see why you asked about this. The image that I posted is only one of a series of photos that I shot of him the same day. He's been keeping me busy the last month or so! However, I don't want to bore everyone with posting images of him all the time, though, and I try to vary what I share in each day's POTD and in the Bird Photos thread on here.Doesn't look like Alfred, but like a juvenile heron . Lucky you to have the "show" so close where you live!Thank you! Oh, actually it IS Alfred, a mature GBH -- he just had his wings and body at a very awkward angle in this image. I am lucky to have a lot of time to spend observing and photographing Alfred. In fact, I'm still sorting through the latest lot which were shot only yesterday.... He managed to surprise me once again!
I don't think he is a juvie GBH because of the way he presents (as I am watching him and in other images I have shot) with the full feathered chest and such..... I agree, though, that he is probably still quite young, even though having matured into adulthood.
Of course there is the possibility that there is more than one GBH hanging around in our neighborhood, and that is something I've had in mind while shooting and later reviewing images in the post-processing stage. Never can be quite sure here. In general, GBH are solitary creatures who tend to feed alone and of course they all look a whole lot alike as well!
There have been many GBH through the years here where I live, and a while ago I started to just to call them all "Alfred...." They're all "Great" Blue Herons......hence, my name for them: "Alfred the Great!" (Borrowing the name from the UK and its history....)
Indeed. It (and the accompanying sake) was actually too much. Great fun!
Mother Nature didn't bless me with a very good sunrise this morning
To my surprise, yesterday during a pretty vigorous thunderstorm, Alfred came flying by and then landed on the roof of one of the townhouses across the lake from me. Of course I just had to go out on my deck and shoot photos, being careful not to get either myself or the camera too wet. Thankfully the rain had slowed down quite a bit, although there was still thunder and the occasional flash of lighting. My guess is that he probably was enjoying the cooling-off that the rain was providing after the fierce "heat dome" / heatwave with which this area and others around the US and the world have been dealing this past week.

In Glasgow? People would just sit under it like a young bird, with their mouth open and never cross the road...Clever! Next it should be dispensing alcohol 😊
