Oh, third look, that is a 'squirrel proof' feeder. I kid you not... I had one, and I think it took the local thieves a grand total of a day and a half to win that challenge. Some birds wouldn't use it either, apparently afraid to stick their necks into that wire cage. Not exactly the best design I suppose, and it sure didn't work well once they figured it out and told all their friends. *sigh*

I can't find a picture of the one that I had that seemed to hold out the most promise. It was like this, only the outer sleeve of fencing was spring loaded so that when a squirrel got on it, it slid down blocking access to the food ports. BUT whenever there were a few birds on it, it also tended to slide down too, and especially if one landed on it hard enough to move it. This was the one that the squirrels had the worst time with, but the deer cleaned out several nights in a row until I caught one in the process. So squirrel AND deer proof? I gave up...

It's definitely a challenge to find one that works. My sister has reportedly found one that the squirrels can't bypass (at least so far). I'll see if I can get a photo of it when I'm visiting next week.

I hang one by a wire from a tree branch. They tried to jump to it a few times, but moving it out another foot solved that. I think the sparrows dump enough on the ground that diving to the feeder is too much work.

Continuing the 400mm testing. Looking back, all photos taken from dock at community park. bird/duck house was adjacent property and flowering lillypad, even closer, were in focus. Yesterdays noted focus issues were property lots 6 and 7 along the lakeshore. This one comes closer at property lot 3. Again, the focus crispness issue and at f11, don't see an in-focus zone where I missed focus. The house roof and part of pool enclosure in the background (lot 4) appear close but should be much wider DOF and extend down to items seen through the boat dock. Tomorrow will be clear across lake where obviously infinity focus.
