where are you finding tempting mamiyas or pentaxes in terms of price??
Tempting and price are relative terms that may not be tempting to others. I am thinking $500-600 for COMPLETE SYSTEM Mamiya or Pentax 645's and lower with earlier production years of same model. Likewise, Hasselblad 500's for 1000 to 1500, again depending on production year "improvements" of the 500 model line. In any event, all must be rated excellent or above. Considering the new price was 5 to 10 times that amount...that is a great price if in excelllent (mild wear) condition! Considering the price of new digital 35mm bodies and lens, that is inexpensive.

Primary source is local store, KEH and B&H Used which would trust over Ebay. The biggest problem with KEH and B&H is that it is rarely a complete system, but components to assemble - the box, viewfinder (waist or Prism), film back, and lens. By contrast, Ebay usually list complete system, at very good/competitive price, described as "Near Mint" but ships from Japan with return policy back to Japan at your expense. Also, there is the possibility additional charges, such as Custom Broker Clearance fee at delivery. But at least Ebay does give you a good price reference to base a comparison on.

Doing a quick search of Mamiya 645 1000s (an advanced model) KEH EX+ condition $421 with 120 insert but no finder or lens; B&H didn't have any, and Ebay several "Mint or Near Mint" including lens an finder ranging from 499-549 plus 50 shipping. Do have to be careful of the lens as some had the wide angle 45 and only one had the "normal" 80.

Neither did I, but YouTube is your friend. Several have videos explaining the progression in models over the years. Sometimes it is a crank rather than a turn knob to advance film, or the 1000s noted earlier, added 1/1000 shutter speed.

Also, while 645 (6x4.5) is noted as the entry level step up from 35mm with 3x the negative area, I look at is another way. The classic is 6x6, but how many times are you going to use a square format? You crop it to rectangle which, depending on the crop, brings you back down to the 6x4.5 range.

The other reason I like 120 only applies if developing the film yourself. 120 takes twice as much chemicals as 35mm, which isn't necessarily bad. 500ml Iflosol 3 concentrate will process about 16 rolls of 35mm film or 8 rolls of 120 - not forcing double rolls of 120 on reel, but in a pinch could do more. While the concentrate is diluted 9:1 per development session, the remaining concentrate, now in an open bottle, has a shelf life of 3 months. How many rolls will I shoot in 3 months? The 120 with the fewer frames before developing and greater liquid requirement to fully submerge in developer, may be the ideal.

That seems roughly in line with what can be found on eBay from Japan, perhaps a little cheaper. That tells you that your local store is pretty straight up on prices.

The other day I was fooling around and shot something which, while interesting, just wasn't THAT interesting. Before simply deleting the edited image, I decided to experiment further and went into PhotoMania, an online site which offers various filters and styles one can try on one's image. Found one that suited my subject perfectly, so here is the completed project:

My first camera was a Yashica Mat EM, a TLR very similar to the Rolleiflex. Some Rolleis even used Tessar f/3.5 lenses like those on the Yashica. So while you're looking, keep these in mind too. I learned to compose and expose with that camera, develop 120 film, etc. Really screwed up getting my first roll onto a reel in the dark, but I learned eventually.

My 500C in a mid-sixties studio project at RIT. Photo was taken on a light box. 3'x3' backlit piece on frosted glass, so no retouching required. I had the Super wide body/lens as well. No reflex mirror due to short focal length, incredibly sharp lens. Best medium format camera in the world, but you paid for it! Sorry I had to sell it, but a good friend and fellow student bought it and went on to be a successful commercial photographer.

Those early models are so tempting. All mechanical...no electronics!

I loved the 500C, used one in the 80s - 90s. The sound of the shutter was magic - with its solid 'clunk'.

This afternoon, from a visit to the sea wall at Grain (Kent, UK).
I estimate the wind to be force 5 to 6; I'm glad both camera and lens have some weather proofing as I got a little damp from the spray...
