I'm posting this as a tribute to one of my Heroes. The photo, taken in March 2006, shows the south face of the main building of the University of Glasgow looking onto the River Kelvin.

William Thomson was born in Belfast on 26 June 1824, and the family moved to Scotland when his father was appointed as Professor of Mathematics at the University of Glasgow. By the age of 10 William was himself studying at the University. In 1846 William was appointed as the Chair of Natural Philosophy at the University of Glasgow, a position he held for 53 years. He is famed for his ground-breaking work in thermodynamics as well as being instrumental in laying the first transatlantic cable and many other scientific developments of the 19th Century.

The engineers amongst us will recognise we are talking about Lord Kelvin, a man whose work helped shape the modern world.
