I’m sure that each of us has at least one shot that was an exercise in frustration for a long while; this was one of those for me. I recounted the story (as usual) in the caption to the photo here: LINK.

A great story behind another great photo. I'm sure that many of us (myself included) would have been more than happy with one or more of the images you chose not to process. Your dedication and persistence produced an amazing image!

A return to hummingbirds for me today...trying to dial in my lighting setup to freeze these little creatures in flight has been its own exercise in frustration at times.

3 speedlights!? Wow. The poor fella must be blind by the time he leaves your yard. :)

Very well captured though.

Thanks, Puckman. :) In this set-up, the bird is actually only being illuminated by two of the lights (the third is firing onto the background). And the lights are all firing at relatively low power (1/16), which is part of the trick in trying to freeze the motion, so not exactly nuking them. That said, I have found that most of the hummingbirds are remarkably tolerant of the flashes.

Ilfracombe, last night...

Doylem! This has got to be one of my favourites of yours. The interlocking composition, colour/light balance and intricate details like the light bursts create an engaging viewing experience.
I find I can sit and explore this one, those sharp pointy rocks giving a tease of what could lie around (googling this location was not a disappointment :)) Nice one mate.

Surreal, the perspective aesthetic of the foreground rocks creates so much impact. Great job P :)
Seems like it was worth getting those flat tyres for :p

Thanks guys. I've been trying to shoot various hummingbirds in my yard for about a year now (on and off, obviously) and this is probably the first time where all the planets aligned, so to speak. I got a series of pretty decent shots from this quick visit to a local park.

I'm usually more of a stills/landscape/city photographer, so trying to learn how to track rapidly moving birds (and really, they are very fast) was all new to me. This was all natural light. One of these days, I may try the speedlight approach, but that seems like too much work, haha.

Thanks for that... :)

OK, I like this one, I find it peaceful but the quilt cover in the corner does my nut in and I wish I had spotted it at the time.

Thoughts?
