Sorry for another cat pic.
I was testing the new(ish) animal face detect AF on my Z7. It works remarkably well. It is actually eye detect as well as face detect. Similar to human face detect, it will put a focus rectangle around the face if it can't detect an eye, but switches to a smaller focus rectangle when it detects an eye. It's fairly intelligent in the sense that it will focus on the actual eye for some compositions (i.e. my cat looking away from the camera in semi-profile (around 45 degrees off-axis). But for dead on shots like this, it puts focus on the inner canthus (the spot where her right eye meets her nose and very slightly lower down--near where the grunge is). This was actually the perfect spot for focus as it got her eyes, nose (to the tip), mouth, and ear tips in sharp focus. Kudos to Nikon.
This was taken with a 70-200 f/2.8E FL with NTZ adaptor at 135mm and f/2.8. Stopping down would have gotten more of her body in focus, but I was testing the animal face detect AF feature and I also prefer subject isolation in general for aesthetic reasons. Handheld with an on-camera flash pointed straight up at the ceiling. The vignetting was added in post.
