Yesterday when I wandered over to the deck of our community clubhouse I happened to glance down at the water below me and found a surprise -- my buddy Alfred! He was standing on a rock partly under the deck and I was immediately above him, which made it a bit awkward to get decent shots. I was so close I could see him blinking! He didn't seem fazed by my presence and I moved slowly, carefully and quietly as I tried a couple of different positions from which to shoot. For a while Alfred and I stood quietly enjoying the warm gift of spring arriving....

I love it when I get these opportunities. It’s rare, but sometimes a creature that normally is shy doesn’t flee, but rather almost seems to welcome the opportunity to take their photo.

Beautiful! Different from the usual angle. You can see a lot of detail.

Thanks, AFB and Darmok! I have another image from a different angle that I'll share tomorrow....

Well, Alfred may have somehow recognized me, since I've been photographing him for a couple of years now....only a few times have I gotten really close to him (relatively speaking, of course, the lens was the 100-400mm with the 1.4x TC attached). I was literally on top of him, standing overhead. The image is not cropped, by the way. I was that close!

I imagine, too, that Alfred, like the geese and ducks who hang out around here has become somewhat accustomed to the humans who walk along the boardwalk and the trail that goes around the lake. Also, of course, too, having the camera in silent shutter mode helped significantly, too, so there was no noisy clacking of the shutter, no shotgun sound in burst mode to scare him.

In my experience only when I don’t have the camera with me!
Then they might also be sticking their tongue out at you.

Yeah, e-shutter is a good for such situations. No noise.
