The%20Cabin-Dunnet%20Forest_zpssttanjuy.jpg

Image of the cabin my wife instigated and project managed maturing now after a few years. Built to facilitate public use as a shelter/gathering place and even a function space(weddings etc.).

Built entirely by hand from the forest trees with a roof covered in local soil, sod and wild flowers (600). The forest has suffered greatly of late with many windfallen areas but the voluteer force and management keep fighting back. Thousands of new trees are planted every year and the forest (the most northerly commercial planting) thrives all be it precariously.

It's been 4 years since my last visit to this location and I feel I should make more regular trips. I love the dreamy, surreal feel to this image.

Extreme creativeness here. By comparison my stuff remains reportage only. Ahh well, I doubt I will go this way; I really just record what I see and my sight is not that imaginative:(.

Good stuff.

I think Groucho might have something to say about that...

Yesterday was my last day at work, with little to do except clear my locker out and shred old paperwork

Congratulations! Happy Retirement!

My favourite of yours so far.

Do you see the final image before pressing the shutter or when you see the exposure?

Regards. Sharkey

Thanks! Sometimes I do see the final image and sometimes I don't. I don't think I did with this one. Macro is not my forte and I've really tried to stretch myself this month with it; I've had a lot that I "pre-visioned" that came out horribly and were immediately deleted. On the other hand, with some of the macro images this month, they ended up looking very differently on screen than what I saw when I was shooting. Like the heart shaped petal one, I didn't see it as hearts (because a lot of these flowers are really quite small) until seeing on a 27" screen.

That said, with my "normal" photography of my kids, family, life, etc., I do often see the final image as I click and then I spend time editing to make it look the way it did in my head. A lot of my all-time favorite images I see in my head as I compose/shoot but the SOOCs don't match what I was feeling, so I play with the colors, etc. to align the vision and final image.

The second paragraph kind of indicates a need to shoot RAW. It is funny, the stages we go through with this digital stuff; right now I am heading towards just using the jpgs from the X_T2 and keeping the RAW as a sort of backup. The OOC stuff has really opened my eyes as to seeing before I click, as in the film days. The rather flat, lifeless RAW files that need production have always been a bit of a dissappointment to me. I suppose that is why, with my own stuff I have tended to over-do it.

Shooting for money is a no brainer RAW but when it is for yourself the OOC stuff can be a lot more satisfying and in some way exciting; especially if you can resist the chimping.

In your place I think recognising my own talent would be good (I have always known my limits). Your final product is, of those I have seen is very stylish and full on colourful. Good stuff.

Yes, I always shoot raw; I started just a few months after getting my first dSLR and wanted more editing capabilities. I also very rarely convert to B&W and "full on colorful" is sort of my signature. :) I don't see tones at all, but see oodles of colors (which is somewhat disheartening at times as my son is colorblind, and I think my superior color vision is directly related to his simplified color vision). I don't do a lot of editing on all of my photos. I have my own LR preset that use for import with contrast settings; I shoot in Kelvin so often my WB is already pretty good SOOC and just needs a little tweaking, and then I can sync. I do shoot like a drunken sailor, so pretty much always have to straighten the horizon. But more most of my photos I probably don't spend any more than a minute per image editing, if that (most of which is individual horizon fixing). I'd say less than 25% of my images get a "full" PS edit, and those are the images that I would have "seen in my head" as I took them.
