Probably be a while before I see any Juncos again...
Unbelievable - my Sigma 150-600 Contemporary arrived this morningView attachment 913601
I traded in some unused gear today for the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary. Now I have to learn my birds! (But they were scarce on my walk today, so guess what -- you get flowers again.)

A friend of mine who has it says she never handholds it at less than 1/1600. With my trade in, the net cost was only $10 for me, so I also ended up buying a used Manfrotto monopod. I don't expect to use the monopod often, but if my son ever gets to go back to lacrosse games it will be really helpful there. Of course, I do have tripods already that I can use if I want to remain stationary somewhere. But that isn't really my style. ?Now the work begins...

I always use the monopod when I go out on a field hike. While I don't have a 150-600 (yet) with a smaller tele, find racking over shoulder with the lens resting on shoulder very easy and convenient. Doesn't feel like carrying a lot of weight. Quickly plant (or track BIF) and shoot. Also attach a sling strap so can let it hang hands free when getting something. Bay want to try it.A friend of mine who has it says she never handholds it at less than 1/1600. With my trade in, the net cost was only $10 for me, so I also ended up buying a used Manfrotto monopod. That’s definitely a fun lens with very nice image quality. Also light(ish) enough to hand-hold for reasonable periods. You’ll have fun getting to know your birds!View attachment 913601

Learning the birds is the fun part. My wife actually has a list of birds we’ve seen in our yard, and she was super excited to see a thrush yesterday. Well, I saw it and photographed it, but it counts anyway! She knew nothing of birds before, and she said “teenage her” would have roller her eyes at this. My 8 year old can use the bird ID book like a champ, too!View attachment 913601
