Tanagra (not really)
I can finally add barn swallow to the bird photo checklist. Well, at least a legible photo of one. In-flight it's like trying to photograph a drunken missile. I have tons of respect for those that get them in-flight.

Why the high ISO and crazy shutter speed? Mostly because I was shooting birds at a nearby Sanctuary about 20 minutes before this and didn't bother to change it back for this shot .
that camera really has a shutterspeed of 1/10,000? i thought the max was 1/8000.

Mechanical tops out at 1/8000, but eshutter goes to 1/32000. We sure have it rough!
ohhhh...hmmm. i've never used the electronic shutter on my cameras. i wonder if they go faster than 1/8000. but i know with electronic shutters you can get weird banding and sometimes super bendy objects like swinging golf clubs.

Yup , like D&J said , the electronic shutter goes up to 1/32000 max . Usually I just use the mechanical shutter , but when I set up the camera last night I went with the electronic thinking I might need it for BIF as it promised to be a bright day (and was). First time I've ever gone over 1/8000 to my knowledge .

The only time I've gotten them in the air is when they're landing/taking off/hovering around a nesting box . Getting them in free flight is just luck IMHO . Doesn't matter how good you are ,

It’s application specific, for sure, but I use eshutter on long lenses. That way shutter shock isn’t an issue, and the silent operation doesn’t alert wildlife.

Electronic shutter is needed when shooting in silent mode, and the banding issue (rolling shutter) seems to occur more under artificial light such as fluorescent than in natural light, but yeah, it can also be a problem in some natural light situations as well. I tend not to use silent mode when shooting, even when doing the wildlife, because I really like having audible feedback when I've pressed the shutter..... old-school, I guess!! Obviously if I were at a wedding or somewhere in a situation where it was preferable to use silent mode, I would do so, though.
