Another view of the B-17 I posted yesterday. Interesting fact: the Flying Fortress had 13 machine guns but with a nominal fuel & bomb load, it carried enough ammo for about one minute of sustained firing per gun – they had to be fired in short bursts to conserve ammo. They were highly dependent on fighter escorts for protection.
