RIP to this one:
This massive machine brought in two firefighting helicopters to Sydney. Unfortunately she was lost in the Ukraine conflict, stuck on the ground and destroyed in the fighting.
I was lucky to see it a few times. I never got to see the bigger AN-225, it never came to my city and I never managed to be in the right place elsewhere to see it.
The most striking thing with the AN-124-100M-150 (the one above) versus the regular one is the reduced noise. I am not sure if it's entirely the chevrons on the trailing edge of the engine cowlings (like the 747-8 also has) or further engine modifications, but it was a lot quieter than the other AN124s I've seen.
The takeoff procedure is still a classic. They sit on the runway for a set time with the engines roaring away and once they are happy the power is safely set the brakes are released and giant slowly begins to roll.

Most of the times I've photographed these have been at night - they either arrived and or departed late at night. I used 1/4sec shutter speed for the above and ISO3200 and F/5.6 with a Nikon D800e. The lighting of the plane is mainly due to the surrounding airport lights.
