Still at the old lumberyards... I'll move on to elsewhere tomorrow. This transformer in a basement has been trashed by people & the room it's in has been filled with graffiti & debris. I still don't understand the desire to trash things or places just because they are abandoned or unused.

thanks for posting this.
i agree with your words, as well.

we, as humans, have so much to repair within ourselves.
"abandoned" to me means an inability to change.
if we fail to change, we die.

Makes great found art though... thanks for preserving it in photographic form.

I am sometimes a fan of graffiti and figure if it's going to pop up somewhere, a place such as you photographed is a good one. This attitude of mine may be left over from a time I hung out with an East Village found-materials sculptor in NYC. No piece of debris was too weird not to be hauled up to his loft... and leftovers later sent sailing over the rail to the concrete of the first floo, to be dragged out for someone else to half-repurpose yet again. Beauty is always in the eye of beholders (or seekers of either "blank canvas" or art supplies).

Nicely done. I have a glass ball, but it’s full of bubbles.

Thanks! I have a crystal ball, fairly largish but not as large as the one in the photo, that I bought a few years ago and really haven't used all that much. I need to dig it out and experiment with it again. The one in the photo is courtesy of a fellow photographer down at the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC at Cherry Blossom time (early Springtime), when she brought along her crystal ball and set it up on her tripod and a stand so that we could all enjoy trying it out in that rather neat environment. I was reminded of this by a thread on another place where I hang out, NikonCafe, when someone posted about having bought "Lens Balls" and showing examples of what he could shoot with them. They seem to be smaller than most crystal balls I've seen or heard about and either have to be held in the hand, placed in a way that they won't roll off, or positioned on a stand. The larger, heavier crystal balls definitely need to be on a stand. It's fun playing with these things, although disconcerting that the image is upside-down!

Just flip the image in post. :)

reminds me of a long tradition of the greats.
your photo is SO Edward Weston.
just really beautifully done. thank you for posting this !

Thanks so much!
Edward Weston was an early photographic influence of mine and I even have an old well-read, pre-internet purchased copy of the Daybooks around here somewhere. I'll have to dig it out again. Eventually, I gravitated towards Brett's graphic abstract style.
Alas, the siren song of color photography stole my photographic heart in the end . I blame Ernst Haas :D.
Best,
Ed

Thanks again niji,
I've seen some Weston prints in person through the years and the tonal range always impressed me and stuck with me.
My early b&w prints were attempts to catch some of that magic light.
It's an honor to hear from someone familiar with Weston's work and that you see some of it in my pic.
Best,
Ed
