This afternoon when preparing to go out for a walk around the neighborhood (the lake), I swapped out the battery, as I knew the battery in the camera was getting low and figured I'd just take care of putting in a fresh one at home rather than having to do it while standing out on the boardwalk..... I had a 64 GB memory card in the camera, freshly cleared, formatted and ready to go. Normally when I go out on walks I take a small pouch with an extra battery and an extra memory card. Today I figured, "naw, I won't need that, got the fresh battery in the camera, doesn't seem to be much action out there right now, so I won't be shooting up the memory card until it's full......"
So, yeah, guess what, action did develop and 45 minutes or so or so later I'm standing out on the boardwalk firing madly away at the Hooded Mergansers, who apparently think it's spring and are engaging in what looks a lot like courtship/mating behavior, and....uh, oops....the camera burps, and then comes the dreaded message that the memory card is full! AAAAAGGGHHH!!!! The pouch with the extra memory card was....yep, still at home on the table where I'd left it. Sigh..... Lesson learned there! I never know what kind of shooting situation(s) I'm going to run into, I always need to have a spare battery and a spare memory card with me. I reluctantly waved goodbye to the Mergansers and came on home. Still looking through the images I shot, as there were, yeah, a lot of them! Continuous High/burst mode is great but one does pay a price in time later at the computer when sorting through the lot in the end....
Yep, we need to always have the right lens(es) and the backup battery and the backup memory card with us at all times, as sure as shooting, the one time we don't is the time we need one or more of those!
