Took yesterday with my 13 Pro. The late afternoon colors out here are so picture worthy!

Have a look at the SW240 from BenQ. Nice wide colour gamut and should suit your budget.
What do you think of the BenQ PD2700Q? Would I find it acceptable after being used to a 5K iMac screen for the past five years?

I've been looking at the ASUS PA248QV as it seems to be intended for Photo and art editing and is also non-glare, an absolute must. Also available from London Drugs which saves me the mail order hassle and they are great about returns and exchanges.

Are there significant advantages to the BenQ. I might be able to get it through Best Buy? I do like the 16:10 aspect ratio and can handle the higher price. The specs I found did not state either glossy or non-glare for this one.

EDIT: Looking like the BenQ is pretty much out of stock in Canada.

Thanks!

It’s not glossy. Full disclosure the place where I work sells BenQ’s so I’m a bit biased. But I have two on my desk at home.

That’s a 2560 x 1440 resolution. I think they do a 4K version. PD2700U. The last two numbers might be different, but that’s just the model number.
thanks i’ll look at that one too.

also, super important question. is it pronounced ben cue, or benk???

The Q is always a QHD resolution
The U is always a UHD resolution.
The SW’s are the photography ones. PD are designer. But there is a lot of cross over.
this is very helpful but unfortunately i don’t know what any of it means. i only speak imac right now but am also trying to learn to speak monitor.

my son knows a bit, but he knows for gaming, not photography. plus he’s colorblind so gamut doesn’t affect him. well it does, actually, but his gamut is a great deal smaller than most.

So a QHD monitor on a 27” screen has a resolution of 2560x1440. Half of a 5K iMac. Same as the old iMacs used to be a few years back.
A UHD monitor on a 27” screen has a resolution of 3840 x 2160. Just a bit less. In real use not that noticeable.

QHD monitor on a 27
Something I learned about QHD & UHD monitors and photoshop...
In order to get proper display of images at 1:1, one has to run a
display at either its native resolution or at 1:2, 1:4, etc. In the
case of 4K, 1:2 is 1920x1080. A 5k iMac usally runs at 2560x1440 on it's 5120 x 2880.
In other words a QHD screen will give you the same screen real estate you are used to with your 5k iMac, the pixels will not be as dense.

I haven't had a desktop monitor in years. I work off a Windows Surface device. How many K's does one need to verify the image is up to snuff for general printing. I could see the higher resolution for someone doing very large output - advertising

Gamers usually worry more about refresh rates than color reproduction. In PC forums I visit, it’s often like speaking different languages. Gamers think Macs are overpriced, and what is lost on many of them is that display quality (gamut, accuracy) matters to some, and you can’t just use whatever is cheapest for photo developing. Once you start shopping Windows devices that have good displays, the price differences from Macs disappear rapidly.

Increased resolution usually means you do less zooming when developing, but so much can depend on what you set your display density to. I did love the 27” 5K iMac when I had it. Lots of screen to work with.

Since we're on the topic of externals, I have a pair of LG 27UN850-W, which is fairly inexpensive. And, once calibrated, they work excellently for photo editing and media consumption.

Ahem.....people, this is really supposed to be a PHOTO IMAGE thread, rather than a discussion thread. It looks to me as though probably it could be really beneficial to everyone to have an actual discussion thread focused on displays/monitors, etc.... ?? Maybe someone could start one?
We always have monitors in this thread! ;)
