Nikkor Ai 180mm ED 2.8
Haven't used my old Nikons for a while, soon found out, no matter how hard you press the focus button, it won't focus! ;)
I love the bokeh of this lens

Thanks, you are too kind sir. :)
You have LR? I just push the sliders back and forth until I'm satisfied. Nothing to it really. If you want I can post a screenshot of my settings.

Here's an old one from last year I shot just outside of the city. The moon on the left was just a tiny sliver, but the 30 second exposure completely blew it out.

Canon T2i: 10mm 30sec @ f/4 ISO400

So being serious here. You see i take lots of images of dramatic skies, yet I struggle to get rid of the grain. All I want is to make the skies smooth but I just lack the skills in LR to eliminate it.

So when you have a nice sky like this, i would like very much to see your noise settings and also the sharpening. I suspect I am missing the golden relationship between luminance, colour, detail and sharpening.

I think you nailed it here so yes please if it isnt rude to ask, would love to see settings.

Call me old fashioned but I've stopped planning shoots and just started enjoying life instead. If there's a shot to be had then I'll go for it but there's no pressure!

I've started to use Flickr as my own personal archive so I can actually remember what I get up to!

You are young mate... Enjoying life tends to be on the less efficient side of the "ways to pay the mortgage spectrum"... :)

If you want to reduce grain, DXO optics does better than LR IMO. I use Lightroom more because grain and noise aren't usually an issue with my set up and type of photography.

Well worn bench

Nice picture, but why did you write Poop on it before you took your shot? ;)

Thx mate. I think my issue is more fundamental than that. Think i am just crap at using my tools. I have spent a fortune on PS, LR, Aperture, Nik, VSCO, Macphun, Capture One, Piccure+, Perfect Suite, a shed load of plugins And the common denominator, I am sad to admit is a problem somewhere between the chair and the keyboard i.e. moi. So how did everyone else become awesome at post?

I use Noise Ninja from Picturecode in PS, but I think it's been superseded by Photo Ninja - http://www.picturecode.com/index.php

Cheers :)

I think your a little hard on yourself. I think the best thing I learnt about pp was get it right in camera. If you have to boost your exposure and shadows because you under exposed it, your always going to end up with grain etc. if your pushing your sliders 100% then the image probably wasn't shot right to start with.
Trial and error helps a lot to. If I look back at my early stuff I wasn't sure what I was thinking half the time!

Not rude at all. I will shoot you a message later on in the week when I have some time. I don't know of any golden relationship between them. I have a usual starting point I apply with a preset, and then further tweak from there if need be. AFB is right though, its best to get it mostly right in camera. If I have to push certain sliders past 50% or so then I don't bother with further edits.

There was a thread a while back for others to edit your RAW files (you are shooting RAW, right??) perhaps throw one or two in there and see if its your actual photo taking, or you just haven't learned how or which sliders to push. As for getting good at it, it just takes practice, just like learning to use the camera. Myself I have been going to the community college off an on for years to learn new things and further my skills. I understand that may not be possible, but honestly you can pull up a YouTube tutorial on just about any and everything these days.
