A little different POTD subject today - When riding a bike, always wear a helmet as it is not a matter of if, but when. This selfie was taken at about the turnaround point for a 30 mile ride for my "no haircut since February"...but there was a "Florida hill", a/k/a pedestrian overpass, a mile away so continued on. After hitting 29mph on the downside, couldn't slow down enough for the 90 degree turn in the trail. Wheels lost traction in the turn and slid. Obvious road rash contusions on my left side and puncture wound middle of right calf (probably the brake lever), destroyed Rx sunglasses, witnessed by a nursing student, his wife and baby who were walking the trail in the opposite direction and gave me some alcohol wipes and a mask where could go into McDonalds and wash with soap and water. Actually rode my bike home but 6 mile shortcut on roads and sidewalks which in retrospect can't believe I did with a fractured clavicle. Began experiencing problems in the final 2 miles noting grapefruit size hematomas developing on my left thigh plus orange size at the right puncture wound and couldn't keep left arm on handlebar for long, needing to stretch and exercise it. 6 hours later in the ER after Xrays and CAT scans, confirmed internal injuries to head or chest and no broken arms or legs...but did confirm a broken collarbone. Other than stiff and limited range of movement, doing well this AM. They exen gave me a Rx for a narcotic which I am going to skip.
Initially thought the helmet wasn't impacted in the accident. Looking at it this AM, notable impact on the left (sliding) side. It did its job, protecting my head, face and scalp.

I'm glad it wasn't any worse than it was and hope you're feeling better. Just a thought, that if cycling helmets are anything like motorcycle helmets, you should throw the old one away and get a new one after a bump like that. All the best.A little different POTD subject today - When riding a bike, always wear a helmet as it is not a matter of if, but when. This is a gorgeous picture, Molly, and the colours are beautiful! You have a real talent. Is that a Lensbaby Velvet photo? I'm thinking of buying the 85 in the not too distant future.
Glad you survived. Hope you heal quickly.A little different POTD subject today - When riding a bike, always wear a helmet as it is not a matter of if, but when. It’s a good job I wasn’t ordering today! Had a brainstorm, it’s the 56 I’m looking at, not the 85. It got stuck in my mind after reading about it on the Lensbaby site!Thank you! Yes this is the velvet 56 and I think this was at 2.8. Possibly 2.0.
Glad you are OK, the guys on my VFR motorcycle forum have an acronym that we all try to abide by: ATGATT, All The Gear All The Time! I wear a full face helmet and probably wouldn't be here if I didn't. I have gone hard enough to grind off parts of the helmet and the side of my boot and put lot of scratches on my leather jacket. I never go any where without my gear, even on short rides.A little different POTD subject today - When riding a bike, always wear a helmet as it is not a matter of if, but when.
