One of my first photos of the Auroras several years ago. Back then I was using a Canon 7D (cropped sensor camera), and a Tokina lens:

Beautiful! 7D was my first “serious” cameraman. I started with a first gen Canon Rebel but it was only 6MP, so only good for very small images.

Where was this taken?

Did they ever catch the idiot?

No! And the carboy was *supposed to be* in a 'secure area'. It was a bit of an issue on campus for a while, and local people got freaked out thinking that it was in the water supply. (Only if you drank from toilets, and those toilets. The water department was concerned though over it hitting their treatment plant)

I graduated the next semester and left town, but it was pretty crazy. Having to use a pipette to remove mercury from a toilet because some jerk though it would be fun... No empathy/sympathy for idiots. Not much at all...

Mercury poisoning can be serious. I heard of a researcher that became exposed to some form of mercury, it messed her brain up and if my brain is cognizant, she died

The 'mad hatter'. Yeah, mercury is amazing, and lethal. That's why I mentioned the mess at the college. It IS a really toxic substance, which was interesting by the reaction of the various levels of the college infrastructure. The campus police were pretty much clueless. The business profs were totally clueless. The chemistry profs blanched. The biology prof told people to be on the lookout for the mercury carboy. When someone started to find it in the toilets, it was some of the chemistry students that were looking for it. It was odd that I found it where I did. In the Science Building...

I took this photo near Chena Lakes in North Pole, Alaska. I started with a Rebel XT, then 40D, and finally with the 7D, at which point I began taking photos of the Auroras, wildlife, and so on. I still use a 5D II as a backup camera for the Auroras and landscapes, but am presently using a Canon R6 for everything. Once I bought the 5DII it became my primary camera for taking photos of the Auroras, and the 7D became one for wildlife photography. So the R6 has now become my primary camera, and the 5DII for the backup one for the occasional landscape and Northern Lights when I don't want to swap lenses.

no, sorry. I' ve heard it's pretty flat, so I ve avoided it
:D

have been to a dozen of states, we chose the hilly ones
As someone who had lived in Kansas for several years, it’s not all flat. The NE portion of the state is rolling river hills and near the center of the state you have the Flint Hills, both are quite beautiful. The western and SE part of the state is a bit flatter, but I’ve been through far flatter states. Most of Illinois and a lot of Texas comes to mind, but even those states have some topography in places.

Same batch of over the hill Thanksgiving flowers. Not much light this go round so the camera grabbed an ISO of 1250 to achieve the selected shutter speed of 1/60th. Combined with the all in digital zoom, the result was a bit more noise than I would have liked.
Time for some PS special effects. Mild use of a radial blur filter, plus a bit of a saturation and contrast bump.
